Book Synopsis Linguistic Structure and Change by : Thomas Berg
Download or read book Linguistic Structure and Change written by Thomas Berg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Berg challenges context-free theories of linguistics; he is concerned with the way the term 'explanation' is typically used in the discipline. He argues that real explanations cannot emerge from a view which asserts the autonomy of language, but only from an approach which seeks to establish a connection between language and the contexts in which it is embedded. The author examines the psychological context in detail. He uses an interactiveactivation model of language processing to derive predictions about synchronic linguistic patterns, the course of linguistic change, and the structure of poetic rhymes. The majority of these predictions are borne out, leading the author to conclude that the structure of language is shaped by the properties of the mechanism which puts it to use, and that psycholinguistics thus qualifies as one likely approach from which to derive an explanation of linguistic structure.

Book Synopsis Songs and Rhymes Readers Theatre for Beginning Readers by : Anthony D. Fredericks
Download or read book Songs and Rhymes Readers Theatre for Beginning Readers written by Anthony D. Fredericks and published by Libraries Unlimited. This book was released on 2008 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kids love music and rhymes; literacy often begins that way. Singing nursery and other rhymes, pairing the song with books is a proven way to begin reading instruction and it is fun! Primary teachers and their librarians love to play rhyming and singing games often accompanied by hand and body motions. Out of requests from teachers and librarians attending his workshops, Tony Fredericks presents this readers theatre book for young readers, grades 1-2, built on the songs and rhymes that they already love and know. Scripts built around such rhymes and songs as: The Itsy, Bitsy Spider, The Farmer in the Dell, Hush, Little Baby, If You're Happy and You Know It, and I'm a Little Teapot will encourage kids to read the scripts, all the while building reading fluency. As in Fredericks' other books for the beginning reader, this book furnishes presentation suggestions, rationale for using readers theatre, and readability information, as well as ideas for movement and dance. Grades 1-2.

Book Synopsis From Victoria to Vladivostok by : Benjamin Isitt
Download or read book From Victoria to Vladivostok written by Benjamin Isitt and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book brings to life a forgotten chapter in the history of Canada and Russia – the journey of 4,200 Canadian soldiers from Victoria to Vladivostok in 1918 to help defeat Bolshevism. Combining military and labour history with the social history of BC, Quebec, and Russia, Benjamin Isitt examines how the Siberian Expedition exacerbated tensions within Canadian society at a time when a radicalized working class, many French-Canadians, and even the soldiers themselves objected to a military adventure designed to counter the Russian Revolution. The result is a highly readable and provocative work that challenges public memory of the First World War while illuminating tensions – both in Canada and worldwide – that shaped the course of twentieth-century history.
