Download or read book Raymond written by Kristin Ozana Doyle and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-05-26 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The winding Lamprey River snakes its way through many areas of Raymond and has played a dual role in the towns history, helping in times of fire and hindering in times of flood. Raymond began as a small farming village and grew over the years into a bustling resort community. The town was a busy stop on the Boston and Maine Railroad line, and its accessibility aided the town in its expansion. Raymond has since evolved into a modern town with a strong sense of historical perspective. The vintage images in this book, culled from the collections of the Raymond Historical Society and numerous local residents, document the history of this constantly changing community.

Book Synopsis British Labour and the Cold War by : Peter Weiler
Download or read book British Labour and the Cold War written by Peter Weiler and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical examination of the labour government and trades Union Congress in the immediate postwar period, this book argues that the Cold War was not just a traditional conflict between states but also an attempt to contain the growth of radical working-class movements at home and abroad. These radical movements, stimulated by the Second World War and its aftermath, seemed to policymakers within the Labour Party and the TUC to threaten British interests. The author contends that the Labour government never seriously considered following a socialist foreign policy, but instead sought to shape political developments throughout the world in ways most conductive to maintaining Britain's traditional economic and imperial interests. The government was able to follow established policies abroad and increasingly at home at least in part because British trade union leaders supported its attempts to prevent radicals and communists from coming to power in trade union movements inside Britain and throughout the world. In so doing, the trade union movement significantly extended its links with the state, in particular by cooperating with it in the sphere of foreign and colonial labour policy.
Book Synopsis Flower Class Corvettes by : John Lambert
Download or read book Flower Class Corvettes written by John Lambert and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to creating models of the World War II warship, featuring history on the ship as well as crafting tips. The “ShipCraft” series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeler through a brief history of the subject class, highlighting differences between sister-ships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage, featuring color profiles, highly detailed line drawings, and scale plans. The modelling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the ships, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic gallery of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales, and the book concludes with a section on research references—books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites. This volume includes all the features of the regular series, but the extent has been doubled to include far more detailed drawings of a class of ship that was built in huge numbers and in many variations. Mainstay of the Atlantic battle against the U-boats, Flower class corvettes were used by the British, Canadian, French, and U.S. Navies. “An excellent guide to an important ship in the Second World War, for modeler and maritime enthusiasts alike.” —The Nautical Magazine

This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LSTs, the amphibious landing ships, or Long, Slow Targets - as the men who sailed on them referred to their ships - were a key ingredient in the Allies' victory in World War 2. From the beaches of Normandy, North Africa, Italy and the island fortresses of the Pacific, these lumbering ships delivered the troops and their weapons and supplies where they were needed. In telling the story of LST 920, author Mike Botula pays a tribute to his father, Lieutenant Charles Botula, Jr who served as the 920's second in command as well as the other sailors who helped win the ultimate victory. Included is the back story of the LST 920s mission, including the LST 920s captain, Harry Schultz who defied orders in order to save the lives of men from an LST torpedoed by an enemy U-boat. It's also the story about the challenges facing an America family during the greatest war that the world has ever seen.

Book Synopsis The Gardens of the British Working Class by : Margaret Willes
Download or read book The Gardens of the British Working Class written by Margaret Willes and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This magnificently illustrated people’s history celebrates the extraordinary feats of cultivation by the working class in Britain, even if the land they toiled, planted, and loved was not their own. Spanning more than four centuries, from the earliest records of the laboring classes in the country to today, Margaret Willes's research unearths lush gardens nurtured outside rough workers’ cottages and horticultural miracles performed in blackened yards, and reveals the ingenious, sometimes devious, methods employed by determined, obsessive, and eccentric workers to make their drab surroundings bloom. She also explores the stories of the great philanthropic industrialists who provided gardens for their workforces, the fashionable rich stealing the gardening ideas of the poor, alehouse syndicates and fierce rivalries between vegetable growers, flower-fanciers cultivating exotic blooms on their city windowsills, and the rich lore handed down from gardener to gardener through generations. This is a sumptuous record of the myriad ways in which the popular cultivation of plants, vegetables, and flowers has played—and continues to play—an integral role in everyday British life.

Book Synopsis Iterative Methods in Combinatorial Optimization by : Lap Chi Lau
Download or read book Iterative Methods in Combinatorial Optimization written by Lap Chi Lau and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-04-18 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of approximation algorithms for NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems, several techniques from exact optimization such as the primal-dual method have proven their staying power and versatility. This book describes a simple and powerful method that is iterative in essence and similarly useful in a variety of settings for exact and approximate optimization. The authors highlight the commonality and uses of this method to prove a variety of classical polyhedral results on matchings, trees, matroids and flows. The presentation style is elementary enough to be accessible to anyone with exposure to basic linear algebra and graph theory, making the book suitable for introductory courses in combinatorial optimization at the upper undergraduate and beginning graduate levels. Discussions of advanced applications illustrate their potential for future application in research in approximation algorithms.
