Book Synopsis Rhodes in Ancient Times (Classic Reprint) by : Cecil Torr
Download or read book Rhodes in Ancient Times (Classic Reprint) written by Cecil Torr and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhodes in Ancient Times Much light has been thrown in late years on the ancient condition of Rhodes. Some three hundred and fifty inscriptions have been found in the island since Hamilton found the first in 1837, and these have been published in collections of inscriptions and in the various archaeological journals. Large numbers of statuettes, vases, coins, gems, etc. have also been found there within the last thirty years, chiefly in the excavations on the sites of Ialysos and Camiros and of some town near the modern village of Siana; and the finest of these may be seen in the British Museum, the Louvre, and the Berlin Museum. But no complete statement has yet been attempted of the results derived from these new materials as well as from those previously accessible. Apparently the only modern works dealing with the subject are these. Meursius, Rhodus, 1675, contains about two-thirds of the passages from the classics that bear on the subject, and also one inscription found at Brindisi. These passages are heaped together without regard to their relative value, and sometimes with amusing forgetfulness of their contexts; and the references are very vague. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Book Synopsis A Short History of Ancient Greece by : PJ Rhodes
Download or read book A Short History of Ancient Greece written by PJ Rhodes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Greece and its legacy have long inspired a powerful and passionate fascination. The civilization that bequeathed to later ages drama and democracy, Homer and heroism, myth and Mycenae and the Delphic Oracle and the Olympic Games has, perhaps more than any other, helped shape the intellectual contours of the modern world. P J Rhodes is among the most distinguished historians of antiquity. In this elegant, zesty new survey he explores the archaic (8th–early 5th centuries BCE), classical (5th and 4th centuries BCE) and Hellenistic (late 4th–mid-2nd centuries BCE) periods up to the beginning of Roman hegemony. His scope is that of the peoples who originated on the Greek mainland and Aegean islands who later migrated to the shores of the Mediterranean and Black Seas, and then (following the conquests of Alexander) to the Near East and beyond. Exploring topics such as the epic struggle with Persia; the bitter rivalry of Athens and Sparta; slaves and ethnicity; religion and philosophy; and literature and the visual arts, this authoritative book will attract students and non-specialists in equal measure.

Book Synopsis The Greek City States by : P. J. Rhodes
Download or read book The Greek City States written by P. J. Rhodes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-26 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political activity and political thinking began in the cities and other states of ancient Greece, and terms such as tyranny, aristocracy, oligarchy, democracy and politics itself are Greek words for concepts first discussed in Greece. Rhodes presents in translation a selection of texts illustrating the formal mechanisms and informal workings of the Greek states in all their variety. From the states described by Homer out of which the classical Greeks believed their states had developed, through the archaic period which saw the rise and fall of tyrants and the gradual broadening of citizen bodies, to the classical period of the fifth and fourth centuries, Rhodes also looks beyond that to the Hellenistic and Roman periods in which the Greeks tried to preserve their way of life in a world of great powers. For this second edition the book has been thoroughly revised and three new chapters added.
