Download or read book Manawydan written by LaErtes Muldrow and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ancient prophecy made by Nubian Queen Hatshepsut, takes generations to fulfill and in the process we follow events through time, space, and disappearances, finally converging in the 21st century where the prophecy continues fulfilling itself. Oba, an African male-child from the Buganda tribe, was destined to join with Iloree, a female-child from the Yoruba tribe. Their joining was prophesized generations before by the once powerful Nubian Pharaoh of Egypt. But something unholy befalls them before their sacred joining can take place, prompting vengeful curses to be placed on all involved. Joshua Lobett, a young man distraught over the death of his beloved mother, vows to change the laws of life and death. During the course of his medical studies and experiments, his life spirals into a world of derangement and he creates a hideous inhuman life form. MANAWYDAN was a specially designed clipper ship for crossing the Middle Passage with its belly full of Black Gold. While on her maiden voyage, MANAWYDAN experienced mutiny, revolt, and a horrific supernatural storm. Then it suddenly vanished dead center of The Devils Triangle, only to reappear generations later in the 21st Century. Greedily turned into a tourist attraction, the netherworld vessel MANAWYDAN had its own demonic agenda, ruthlessly awaiting the innocent, unsuspecting partiers who board in celebration of her Grand Opening during the Queens Ball on Halloween night in San Francisco.

Book Synopsis Russian Style by : Julie A. Cassiday
Download or read book Russian Style written by Julie A. Cassiday and published by University of Wisconsin Pres. This book was released on 2023 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the two decades after the turn of the millennium, Vladimir Putin's control over Russian politics and society grew at a steady pace. As the West liberalized its stance on sexuality and gender, Putin's Russia moved in the opposite direction, remolding the performance of Russian citizenship according to a neoconservative agenda characterized by increasingly exaggerated gender roles. By connecting gendered and sexualized citizenship to developments in Russian popular culture, Julie A. Cassiday argues that heteronormativity and homophobia became a kind of politicized style under Putin's leadership. However, while the multiple modes of gender performativity generated in Russian popular culture between 2000 and 2010 supported Putin's neoconservative agenda, they also helped citizens resist and protest the state's mandate of heteronormativity. Examining everything from memes to the Eurovision Song Contest and self-help literature, Cassiday untangles the discourse of gender to argue that drag, or travesti, became the performative trope par excellence in Putin's Russia. Provocatively, Cassiday further argues that the exaggerated expressions of gender demanded by Putin's regime are best understood as a form of cisgender drag. This smart and lively study provides critical, nuanced analysis of the relationship between popular culture and politics in Russia during Putin's first two decades in power.

Book Synopsis The Ethics of Fur by : Andrew Linzey
Download or read book The Ethics of Fur written by Andrew Linzey and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first multidisciplinary book that addresses the ethics of fur. Whatever might have been true of the past, the production of fur is now morally problematic in terms of both necessity and suffering. There is no necessity in killing animals for nonessential purposes, such as adornment, fashion, or vanity. The argument for utility simply doesn’t hold up. Alternative clothing is now readily available, enduring, and less costly. Worse still, since we know that the animals exploited are sentient, causing them suffering or making animals liable to suffering is arguably intrinsically wrong. The purpose of this volume is to open up and advance further the ethical, political, and specifically legislative endeavors now moving at pace and to encourage the anti-fur movement. That said, there is much to learn from this book about the history, culture, and political arguments for and against fur that should interest scholars and students, as well as those engaged on either side of the debate. It is not common for academics to engage with pressing and contentious moral issues, and we pay tribute to our eighteen contributors for leading the way.

Book Synopsis Showgirls of Las Vegas by : Lisa Gioia-Acres
Download or read book Showgirls of Las Vegas written by Lisa Gioia-Acres and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little girls all over the world may hope to grow up to become a princess, but few ever realize the dream. For those who grow up to become showgirls, they go far beyond, becoming goddess-like objects of men's desire and the epitome of feminine beauty, elegance, and class. As soon as resort casinos began to dot the dusty Las Vegas landscape, major stars, extravagant show productions, and beautiful women helped promote the city to become the ultimate adult playground. In the early 1950s, when women began to dance and parade on the stages of Las Vegas, the showgirl persona evolved from the seductive burlesque-style performance art to the elegant productions modeled after those staged in France, with women dripping in furs and feathers, or in nothing more than a G-string and rhinestones. The over-the-top Las Vegas productions may have faded into obscurity, leaving but one show, Bally's Jubilee, as the longest running showgirl show on the Las Vegas Strip, but the iconic showgirl will forever represent Las Vegas in all of its glitz and glory.
