The present edition I have reason to hope will be unencumbered with typographical errors, while as the reader will perceive, very useful and interesting matter is added to the former one: sections and sentences supposed to be unnecessary in this work have been lopped off; and upon the whole the author is pleased in indulging a hope that it will meet the wants of the country, and the kind approbation of his present patrons and numerous friends. As many are aware the grand object of the work is to give necessary instructions to all who desire them on the rules and exercises of English composition and public speaking; and as we live in an age of improvement all must be convinced of the importance of lessons of instruction being published on this subject. This department of knowledge has too long been neglected in this Province, and it is a matter of deep regret that instructions upon the art have hitherto been limited to our colleges and higher institutions of learning, and yet no study is more intimately connected with public life, public manners and refinement, than the most valuable and interesting study of Rhetoric. It is true there are a few Rhetorics to be obtained in different sections of the Province, but they are so few in number and so rarely found as to most imperiously demand the present publication. In such cases the orator is sometimes compelled by the abundance of his subject to di vide his discourse into several distinct orations, each of itself complete. The proposition is sometimes used to express the object to be obtained in consequence of the measure proposed; and in these cases a number of subordinate propositions may be combined for the accomplishment of one. Thus in Burke's speech on conciliation with America, immediately after the exordium and the narration, he says the proposition is peace. Not peace through the me dium of war; not peace to be hunted through the labyrinth of intricate and endless negotiations; not peace to arise out of universal discord, foment ed from principle in all parts of the empire; not peace to depend on the juridical determination of perplexing questions, or the precise marking the shadowy boundaries of a complex government. I by no means pretend to say that mere rhetorical rules, how just soever, are snficient to form an orator. Supposing natural genius to be favourable, more by a great deal will depend upon private application and study, than upon any system of instruction that is capable of being publicly comma; nicated. But at the same time, though rules and instructions cannot do all that is requisite, they may, however, do much that is' of real use. They cannot, it is true, inspire genius; but they can direct and assist it. They cannot remedy barrenness; but they may correct redundancy. They point out proper models for imitation. They bring into view the chief beauties that ought to be studied, and the principal thoughts that ought to be avoided; and thereby tend to enlighten taste, and to lead genius from unnatural deviations, into its proper channel. What would not avail for the production of great excellencies, may at least serve to prevent the commission of considerable errors.
