Eventually, the limited reserves of fossil fuels, especially oil and gas, will no longer be able to accommodate the ever increasing energy demand. Clean and inexhaustible energy has long been a dream for the human race. Fusion energy stands out among the possible candidates for its self-sustainability and environmentally friendly nature. To realize that on our planet, the tokamak (toroidal chamber with magnetic coils) [1], a doughnut shaped vacuum chamber which contains the high temperature plasma, has become the most successful device thus far as regards magnetic confinement fusion. However, the fusion plasma is at extremely high temperature, which makes direct physical measurements impossible; consequently millimeter-wave imaging becomes a desirable technique for plasma diagnostics. There are many millimeter wave plasma diagnostic tools, but two popular and successful approaches pioneered at UC Davis are Electron Cyclotron Emission Imaging (ECEI) [2] and Microwave Imaging Reflectometry (MIR) [3] [4]. Microwave Imaging Reflectometry (MIR) System is a radar technique used to infer the electron density characteristics by probing the density-dependent cutoff layer in plasmas. A phased Antenna Array is proposed to employ as an electronically controlled focusing and defocusing array, and function as an electronically controlled "lens". In this dissertation, the author focuses on the design of extended tuning range RF MEMS varactors, which can prevent the so-called "pull-in" effect of traditional MEMS structures. Consequently, the capacitance ratio could be increased dramatically and large phase delay (360 °) could be realized. Initially, the MEMS pull-in effect together with structures which could prevent the pull-in effect, and a comparison among them are introduced. Subsequently, the fixed-fixed beam's electromagnetic simulations in HFSS, mechanical simulations in CoventorWare, and optimization of the S parameters in ADS are presented. After that, a six layer micro-fabrication process is introduced, and fabrication problems and solutions are illustrated. The measurement results of a fixed-fixed beam are analyzed, and then a cantilever beam is designed to replace the fixed-fixed beam to solve the residual stress problem. Simulation results, fabrication processes, fabrication problems, solutions, and measurement results are then presented. Finally, analog phase delay which exceeds 360 ° is realized in both Q band and V band. In Q band, the measured insertion losses range from 5 dB to 9 dB in the intermediate-states and down-states, and only less than 2 dB in the up-states, and the measured return losses are better than 7 dB in all states. In addition, in V band, the measured insertion losses range from 9 dB to 12 dB in the intermediate-states and down-states, and only less than 2 dB in up-states, and the measured return losses are better than 9 dB in all states.

Book excerpt: Today’s wireless communications and information systems are heavily based on microwave technology. Current trends indicate that in the future along with - crowaves, the millimeter wave and Terahertz technologies will be used to meet the growing bandwidth and overall performance requirements. Moreover, motivated by the needs of the society, new industry sectors are gaining ground; such as wi- less sensor networks, safety and security systems, automotive, medical, envir- mental/food monitoring, radio tags etc. Furthermore, the progress and the pr- lems in the modern society indicate that in the future these systems have to be more user/consumer friendly, i. e. adaptable, reconfigurable and cost effective. The mobile phone is a typical example which today is much more than just a phone; it includes a range of new functionalities such as Internet, GPS, TV, etc. To handle, in a cost effective way, all available and new future standards, the growing n- ber of the channels and bandwidth both the mobile handsets and the associated systems have to be agile (adaptable/reconfigurable). The complex societal needs have initiated considerable activities in the field of cognitive and software defined radios and triggered extensive research in adequate components and technology platforms. To meet the stringent requirements of these systems, especially in ag- ity and cost, new components with enhanced performances and new functionalities are needed. In this sense the components based on ferroelectrics have greater - tential and already are gaining ground.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the high frequency world, the passive technologies required to realize RF and microwave functionality present distinctive challenges. SAW filters, dielectric resonators, MEMS, and waveguide do not have counterparts in the low frequency or digital environment. Even when conventional lumped components can be used in high frequency applications, their behavior does not resemble that observed at lower frequencies. RF and Microwave Passive and Active Technologies provides detailed information about a wide range of component technologies used in modern RF and microwave systems. Updated chapters include new material on such technologies as MEMS, device packaging, surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters, bipolar junction and heterojunction transistors, and high mobility electron transistors (HMETs). The book also features a completely rewritten section on wide bandgap transistors.

Book excerpt: The work established the viability of a fiber-optic approach for low-loss true time delay of wideband RF signals for phased-array antenna (PAA) beamsteering. In this approach an optical carrier modulated by the RF signal of interest is launched into a delay-line fiber composed of optical Bragg reflection gratings written holographically into the core of a single-mode fiber. The beam is steered by tuning the optical carrier wavelength for reflection from the appropriate grating. The fiber Bragg grating writing performance meets and exceeds PAA requirements. We demonstrated: (1) a time delay accuracy of approximately 2 ps (20 Ps verified); (2) a wavelength writing accuracy for Bragg gratings of 0.04 microns absolute, 0.01 nm relative; (3) a sidelobe suppression of 50 dBe at 2 nm channels and 60 dBe at 3 nm channels. We produced a 4-bit, 16 grating true time delay element which includes an optical circulator. An analytical model, which includes chirp, was developed that predicts both the optical and RF response for the fiber optic Bragg grating.

Morton and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive study of the High-pass/Low-pass topology has been performed, increasing the understanding of error sources arising from bit layout issues and fabrication tolerances. This included a detailed analysis of error sources in monolithic microwave phase shifters due to device size limitations, inductor parasitics, loading effects, and non-ideal switches. Each component utilized in the implementation of a monolithic high-low pass phase shifter was analyzed, with its influence on phase behavior shown in detail. An emphasis was placed on the net impact on absolute phase variation, which is critical to the system performance of a phased array radar system. The design of the individual phase shifter filter sections, and the influence of bit ordering on overall performance was also addressed. A variety of X-band four- and five-bit phase shifters were fabricated in a 200 GHz SiGe HBT BiCMOS technology platform, and further served to validate the analysis and design methodology. The SiGe phase shifter can be successfully incorporated into a single-chip T/R module forming a system-on-a-chip (SoC). Reduction in the physical size of transmission lines was shown to be a possibility with spinel magnetic nanoparticle films. The signal transmission properties of phase lines treated with nanoparticle thin films were examined, showing the potential for significant size reduction in both delay line and High-pass/Low-pass phase topologies. Wide-band, low-loss, and near-hermetic packaging techniques for RF MEMS devices were presented. A thermal compression bonding technique compatible with standard IC fabrication techniques was shown, that uses a low temperature thermal compression bonding method that avoids plastic deformations of the MEMS membrane. Ultimately, a system-on-a-package (SoP) approach was demonstrated that utilized packaged RF MEMS switches to maintain the performance of the SiGe phase shifter with much lower loss. The extremely competitive performance of the MEMS-based High-pass/Low-pass phase shifter, despite the lack of the extensive toolkits and commercial fabrication facilities employed with the active-based SiGe phase shifters, confirms both the effectiveness of the detailed phase error analysis presented in this work and the robust nature of the High-pass/Low-pass topology.
