The calculus turned out to be an interesting model of computation and became theprototype for untyped functional programming languages. Operational and denotational semantics for the calculus served as examples for otherprogramming languages. In typed lambda calculi, lambda terms are classified according to their applicative behavior. In the 1960s it was discovered that the types of typed lambda calculi are in fact appearances of logical propositions. Thus there are two possible views of typed lambda calculi: - as models of computation, where terms are viewed as programs in a typed programming language; - as logical theories, where the types are viewed as propositions and the terms as proofs. The practical spin-off from these studies are: - functional programming languages which are mathematically more succinct than imperative programs; - systems for automated proof checking based on lambda caluli. This volume is the proceedings of TLCA '93, the first international conference on Typed Lambda Calculi and Applications,organized by the Department of Philosophy of Utrecht University. It includes29 papers selected from 51 submissions.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper describes the simply-typed 2-[lambda]- calculus, a language with three levels: types, terms and rewrites. The types and terms are those of the simply-typed [lambda]-calculus, and the rewrites are expressions denoting sequences of [beta]-reductions and [eta]- expansions. An equational theory is imposed on the rewrites, based on 2- categorical justifications, and the word problem for this theory is solved by finding a canonical expression in each equivalence class. The canonical form of rewrites allows us to prove several properties of the calculus, including a strong form of confluence and a classification of the long-[beta]-[eta]-normal forms in terms of their rewrites. Finally we use these properties as the basic definitions of a theory of categorical rewriting, and find that the expected relationships between confluence, strong normalisation and normal forms hold."

The 27 contributed papers were selected from 61 submissions of generally very high quality, and the Program Committee had a hard time making the selection. The editor would like to thank everyone who submitted a paper and to express his regret that many interesting works could not be included. The editor also wishes to thank the invited speakers, the members of the Program and Organizing Committees, the Publicity Chair, and the referees for their joint e?ort towards the success of the conference. The support from the Nara Convention Bureau is gratefully acknowledged. The typed lambda calculus continues to be an important tool in logic and theoretical computer science.
