Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of sermon outlines is offered as testimony to the dedication and preparation with which Ruble Thompson served his master, the Lord Jesus Christ. Written and delivered between 1960 and 1972, these outlines represent only a brief glimpse into the methodology employed by Reverend Thompson for the purpose of founding, nourishing, nurturing, then ultimately challenging the many flocks he tended. Throughout his service as pastor and evangelist he ushered countless souls to the foot of the cross where he helped them discover the eternal joy that awaits through salvation by the blood of Jesus. In consideration of such a holy duty, Ruble put a great deal of study and research and meditation into every sermon he delivered. It is this steadfast devotion to the interpretation of God's word (the Bible) and the demonstration of its power to transform lives and hearts that is presented for exhibition and study upon these pages.

Book Synopsis The Revival of 1857-58 by : Kathryn Long
Download or read book The Revival of 1857-58 written by Kathryn Long and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fresh, in-depth examination of the Revival of 1857-58, a widespread religious awakening most famous for urban prayer meetings in major metropolitan centers across the United States. Often mentioned in religious history texts and articles but overshadowed by scholarly attention to the first and second "Great Awakenings," the revival has lacked a critical, book-length analysis. This study will help to fill this gap and to place the event within the context of Protestant revival traditions in America. The Revival of 1857-58 was a multifaceted religious movement that Long suggests may have been the closest thing to a truly national revival in American history. The awakening marked the coming together of formalist and populist evangelical groups, particularly in urban areas, and helped to create the beginnings of a transdenominational religious identity among middle-class American evangelicals. Long explores the revival from various angles, emphasizing the importance of historiography and examining the way Calvinist clergy and the editors of the daily press canonized particular versions of the revival story, most notably its role in the history of great awakenings and its character as a masculine "businessmen's revival." She gives attention to grassroots perspectives on the awakening and also pursues wider social and cultural questions, including whether the revival actually affected evangelical involvement in social reform. The book combines insights from contemporary scholarship concerning revivals, women's history, and nineteenth-century mass print with extensive primary source research. The result is a clearly written study that blends careful description with nuanced analysis.

Book Synopsis Political Acts by : Fiona Coleman Coffey
Download or read book Political Acts written by Fiona Coleman Coffey and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the establishment of the Northern Irish state in 1921, theatre has often captured and reflected the political, social, and cultural changes that the North has experienced. From the mid–twentieth century, theatre has played a particularly important role in documenting women’s experiences and in showing how women’s social and political status has changed with the transformation of the state. Throughout the North’s history, women’s dramatic writing and performance have often contradicted mainstream narratives of the sectarian conflict, creating a rich and daring trove of counternarratives that contest the stories promoted by the government and media. Moving beyond the better-known women theatre practitioners of the North such as Marie Jones, Christina Reid, Anne Devlin, and the Charabanc Theatre Company, Coffey recovers the lost history of lesser-known, early playwrights and highlights a new generation of women writing during peacetime. She examines how Northern women have historically used the theatrical stage as a form of political activism when more traditional avenues were closed off to them. Tracing the development of women’s involvement in Northern theatre, Coffey ultimately illuminates how issues such as feminism, gender roles, violence, politics, and sectarianism have shifted over the past century as the North moves from conflict into a developing and fragile peace.

Book Synopsis Pentecostal Politics in a Secular World by : Joel Halldorf
Download or read book Pentecostal Politics in a Secular World written by Joel Halldorf and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-08 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the life and leadership of Lewi Pethrus, a monumental figure in Swedish and international Pentecostalism. Joel Halldorf describes Pethrus’ role in the emergence of Pentecostalism in Sweden, the ideals and practices of Swedish Pentecostalism, and the movement’s turn to professional party politics. When Pentecostals in the USA ventured into politics, they became allied with the Republican party, and later Donald Trump. The Swedish Pentecostals took another route: while culturally conservative, they embraced the progressive economic politics of the Social Democratic party. During the 2010s, they have also rejected the nationalism of the growing populist movement. Halldorf analyzes and explains these differences between Swedish evangelicals and Pentecostals on the one hand, and the Religious Right in the USA on the other.
