Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher Education is in a state of ferment. People are seriously discussing whether the medieval ideal of the university as being excellent in all areas makes sense today, given the number of universities that we have in the world. Student fees are changing the orientation of students to the system. The high rate of non repayment of fees in the UK is provoking difficult questions about whether the current system of funding makes sense. There are disputes about the ratio of research to teaching, and further discussions about the international delivery of courses.

This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dramatic shifts in the demographic and labor diversity of American faculty have pressed institutions and the profession to clarify who the Âreal faculty are, from tenured to adjunct faculty. Efforts to equalize respect, resources, and treatment, although laudable, may be missing a vital aspect of the conversation: the role of collegiality and the collegium. Collegiality, the cultural, structural, and behavioral components, and the collegium, or the shared identity collegiality serves, are ancient concepts that raise timely questions for the faculty profession: What is it about the history of the professoriate in America that has rendered the collegium inadequate and yet so important in an age of differentiated labor? How might a renewed vision for collegiality bring clarity to the question of which faculty should be regarded as experts? How can we adapt and leverage these important concepts for a professoriate that is increasingly diverse by demographics and employment category in ways that result in a more inclusive and robust profession? Engaging in these questions through the extant literature will call readers into a compelling new conversation about the needs of and possibilities for the professoriate. This is the fourth issue of the 43rd volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

The focus is on meeting departmental and institutional expectations for collegiality and service. While a superior record for collegiality and service are unlikely to compensate for a weak teaching or publishing record, an inadequate record for one or both of these can result in denial of tenure and promotion. Following the recommendations in this book can substantially increase the likelihood of meeting collegiality and service expectations.

Book excerpt: This third volume of the History of Vatican II describes the period during which the Second Vatican Council began to assume its mature and distinct character. With the succession of Pope Paul VI to Pope John XXIII the Council had a new head. With the revisions of texts accomplished during the first intersession the council had a new agenda more in line with the desires of the majority that had emerged during the first period. With the appointment of four Moderators the Council had a new leadership. The ecumenical commitment of the Council became visible, not only in the discussion of a decree on ecumenism, but in the visit of Paul VI to the Holy Land. During the second intersession the work of the Council continued, the most important features of which were the beginnings of the liturgical reform, the revision of the major texts still to be considered or voted on, and a plan to reduce many other texts to simple sets of propositions that was designed to make it possible for the Council to end with the third period.
