Download or read book Assessing the Sustainability and Biological Integrity of Water Resources Using Fish Communities written by Thomas P. Simon and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the application of fish community characteristics to evaluate the sustainability and biological integrity of freshwaters. Topics include perspectives on use of fish communities as environmental indicators in program development, collaboration, and partnership forming; influence of specific taxa on assessment of the IBI; regional applications for areas where the IBI had not previously been developed; and specific applications of the IBI developed for coldwater streams, inland lakes, Great Lakes, reservoirs, and tailwaters.

Book excerpt: The monitoring of point sources by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the states, and the tribes has documented and helped reduce the levels of chemical stressors affecting our ecosystems. With the controls on point sources reducing chemical contamination, new environmental challenges associated with nonpoint sources have emerged. To adequately deal with these new problems, EPA's Office of Research and Development recognized the need to develop an overall under standing of the condition of our ecological resources, the trends in their condition, and the stressors affecting these systems on a broad scale. Toward this end, the En vironmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) was established by EPA and has been strategically developing the scientific tools and techniques to monitor and assess the status and trends of aquatic ecosystems. EMAP scientists have developed new indicators and probability-based de signs to fill data gaps in the development of regional-scale assessments of our aquatic resources, as required in the Clean Water Act. We have a scientifically de fensible approach that allows: 100 percent coverage of the aquatic resources within broad geographic areas and the formulation of reference 'conditions for es tablishing the health of these resources. The use of these indicators and designs were successfully demonstrated in the landscapes, streams, and estuaries of the mid-Atlantic states as part of the Mid-Atlantic Integrated Assessment (MAlA).

Book Synopsis A Review of Protocols for Monitoring Streams and Juvenile Fish in Forested Regions of the Pacific Northwest by : Scott A. Stolnack
Download or read book A Review of Protocols for Monitoring Streams and Juvenile Fish in Forested Regions of the Pacific Northwest written by Scott A. Stolnack and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document reviews existing and proposed protocols used to monitor stream ecosystem conditions and responses to land management activities in the Pacific Northwest. Because of recent work aimed at improving the utility of habitat survey and fish abundance assessment methods, this review focuses on current (since 1993) monitoring efforts that assess stream habitat conditions and juvenile fish use. It does not focus on protocols specifically intended to monitor trends in fish populations for salmon recovery efforts, other fish life-history stages (e.g., salmonid smolt monitoring or spawner surveys), or approaches designed to monitor water quality or sources of pollution. We provide an overview of agency monitoring protocols, adaptive management, and types of monitoring, and briefly review the core habitat characteristics thought to be most sensitive to forest management practices. Finally, we summarize a selection of protocols in use in the Pacific Northwest in light of those core habitat characteristics.
Book Synopsis The Ecological Status of European Rivers: Evaluation and Intercalibration of Assessment Methods by : Mike T. Furse
Download or read book The Ecological Status of European Rivers: Evaluation and Intercalibration of Assessment Methods written by Mike T. Furse and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-20 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monitoring of benthic diatoms, macrophytes, macroinvertebrates and fish will be the backbone of future water management in Europe. This book describes and compares the relevant methodologies and tools, based on a large data set covering rivers in most parts of Europe. The 36 articles presented will provide scientists and water managers with a unique insight into background and application of state-of-the-art monitoring tools and techniques.

Book Synopsis Bioassessment and Management of North American Freshwater Wetlands by : Russell B. Rader
Download or read book Bioassessment and Management of North American Freshwater Wetlands written by Russell B. Rader and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2001-08-07 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first resource of its kind-essential practical guidance on wetlands bioassessment and management Although bioassessment has become a vital tool in the successful management of many aquatic ecosystems, to date there has been no single book that covers the application of bioassessment principles to wetland ecosystems. This contributed volume fills this important gap in the literature, with a multifaceted look at the issues and techniques involved in the successful bioassessment and management of freshwater wetlands. The book is divided into two parts-bioassessment and wildlife management. After a review of general bioassessment principles, Part I discusses the statistical issues related to sampling numerous sites, as well as the application of multivariate procedures and invertebrate functional groups to wetland bioassessment. A series of case studies examines bioassessment results using various organismal groups, followed by several chapters that trace the relationship between bioassessment and wetland restoration. Coverage also explores how to use and sample bacteria, algae, macrophytes, and invertebrates. Part II covers key management topics, including many that are frequently overlooked in other treatments of the subject. Separate chapters discuss how to manage fish, waterbirds, and mosquitoes in wetlands. Other chapters address timber harvest strategies and impact assessment, as well as the biological control of an invasive wetland plant. As wetland managers work to strike a vital balance between resource exploitation and resource protection, this book offers an important repository of practical information to use in meeting this formidable challenge. It will be welcomed by wetland managers and scientists, environmental engineers, ecologists, civil engineers, and others whose work involves wetlands study and management.
