Book excerpt: As a result of more detailed engineering studies of vacuum chamber components and related accelerator physics studies, the circumference of the APS storage ring is increased by 44 m to a value of 1104 m. The increase is 1.1 m for each of the 40 sectors. The insertion region straight section is lengthened by 0.52 m to 6.72 m. This allows full 20-cm vacuum chamber transition sections leading into and out of the 5.2-m insertion devices. Computer studies using TBCI and MAFIA-T3 have indicated that 20-cm-long transition regions reduce the transverse coupling impedance to an Acceptable low value. The results for 10-cm transition length were marginal.

The monitors now include information from two separate bending-magnet sources (one at a dispersive point in the lattice) as well as a 198-period diagnostic undulator. Data logging via EPICS of the observed transverse beam size is coupled with the measured lattice parameters to calculate emittance on-line as well. Information on the beam emittance (7[+-] 1 nm rad) in both the standard lattice and a low[beta][sub y] lattice, the vertical coupling (1 to 4%), and beam position and jitter are logged. In addition, measurements of divergence, (3 to 7[micro]rad), beam bunch length ([approximately] 35 ps), and even effects of the moon's gravity on the source point image position have been performed.

Book excerpt: The single-bunch current limit and tune shift with current have been documented over time in the 7-GeV Advanced Photon Source (APS) storage ring as a function of lattice, chromaticity, and number of small-gap insertion device (ID) chambers. The contribution to the machine coupling impedance of the 8-mm-gap ID chambers was reported earlier [1]. One 5-mm-gap ID chamber was installed in December 1997. This required changing the lattice to preserve the vertical acceptance. The new lattice reduced the average vertical beta function at the 5-mm chamber as well as at all the other ID chambers and so has also lowered the effect of the vertical coupling impedance. As additional 8-mm and 5-mm chambers are planned, a more detailed characterization of the impedance is essential. This includes separating the effects of the transitions between the small-gap chambers and the standard chambers from the resistive wall impedance of the small-gap chambers themselves. In this paper, they report on the transverse instabilities and thresholds observed in the vertical and horizontal planes. From these observations, various contributions to the coupling impedance are derived.
