No felec tion has been made of thofe pieces, but they are all printed to getherin this edition, that the public might have the entire we atre of Henry Fielding. For though it mutt be acknowledged that in the whole collection there are few plays likely to make any confiderable figure on the liage hereafter, yet they are wor thy of being preferved, being the works ofa genius, who in his wildeft and moft inaccurate produetions, yet occafionally dif plays thetalentof a mailer. Though in the plan of his pieces he is not always regular, yet is he often happy in his diftion and ftile; and in every groupe, that he has exhibited, there are to be feen particular delineations that will amply recom pence the attention befiowed upon them. The comedy'of the Mi r, which he has mollly taken from Moliere, has maintained its ground upon the Rage ever: fince it was firft performed, and has the value of a copy from a great painter by an eminent hand. If the comedy of Pct/gm}: were reftored to the'ftage, it would perhaps be a more favourite entertainment with our ao diences than the much-admired Rebmr rl; a more rational one it certainly would be, as it would undoubtedly be better nu derftood.'
