Book excerpt: It was the purpose of this paper to explore classroom tested instructional reading activities for the volunteer teacher aides to use with students in the primary grades. The writer had the opportunity to experience the benefits of a learning center which employs a minimal number of parent volunteer teacher aides. These aides came daily to assist pupils in the primary grades who are experiencing difficulties in reading. Contact with the learning center motivated the writer to explore the literature involving the volunteer teacher aide programs and the utilization of the aides in instructional activities. It is no longer a question of whether we should use paraprofessionals, but how best to prepare them and use their talents and potentials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Child: An Encyclopedic Companion offers both parents and professionals access to the best scholarship from all areas of child studies in a remarkable one-volume reference. Bringing together contemporary research on children and childhood from pediatrics, child psychology, childhood studies, education, sociology, history, law, anthropology, and other related areas, The Child contains more than 500 articles—all written by experts in their fields and overseen by a panel of distinguished editors led by anthropologist Richard A. Shweder. Each entry provides a concise and accessible synopsis of the topic at hand. For example, the entry “Adoption” begins with a general definition, followed by a detailed look at adoption in different cultures and at different times, a summary of the associated mental and developmental issues that can arise, and an overview of applicable legal and public policy. While presenting certain universal facts about children’s development from birth through adolescence, the entries also address the many worlds of childhood both within the United States and around the globe. They consider the ways that in which race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, and cultural traditions of child rearing can affect children’s experiences of physical and mental health, education, and family. Alongside the topical entries, The Child includes more than forty “Imagining Each Other” essays, which focus on the particular experiences of children in different cultures. In “Work before Play for Yucatec Maya Children,” for example, readers learn of the work responsibilities of some modern-day Mexican children, while in “A Hindu Brahman Boy Is Born Again,” they witness a coming-of-age ritual in contemporary India. Compiled by some of the most distinguished child development researchers in the world, The Child will broaden the current scope of knowledge on children and childhood. It is an unparalleled resource for parents, social workers, researchers, educators, and others who work with children.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to investigate strategies to effectively equip children's ministry volunteers to promote longevity. Consequently, discovering strategies to retain volunteers are extremely beneficial. Therefore, this study focuses on a group of children's ministry volunteers from a medium sized church from Placer County. The volunteers filled out a survey rating the current curriculum being used on Sunday mornings. The correlation test confirms the research hypothesis that excellent and equipping curriculum promotes longevity in children's ministry volunteers. The theoretical framework for this study includes, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and the Contemplative-Reflective Model. Each theoretical framework offers strategies to support volunteers to have a thriving children's ministry program. The problem of volunteer burnout negatively affects volunteers, parents, and children within the ministry. The literature review addresses specific topics like ways to motivate, equip, teaching strategies, and offering volunteers an autonomous environment. The practice implications are monthly informal meetings, showing volunteers appreciation, and providing volunteers additional resources throughout the year to promote longevity. The policy implications include church denominations providing funding for digital curriculum, church denominations should offer curriculum and cardiopulmonary resuscitation training for volunteers, and a Buddy System where children with special needs are assigned a qualified volunteer to assist them in Sunday School class. Lastly, recommendations for a future study include comparing different children's ministry curricula, using a qualitative or mixed methods study involving interviewing volunteers on their most effective teaching strategies, and surveying volunteers to discover their love language to ensure they are feeling appreciated for their service.

Book excerpt: Linking research and educational practice for the benefit of both is not a new idea. If practice such as service-learning is a bold departure from the status quo, however, research is not just beneficial, it is critical. If schools are to become laboratories of democracy and entrepreneurship, and if students are to become engaged as partners in renewal of their communities, a research case must be made for service-learning. Does learning take place? Will other kinds of learning suffer? What kinds of practice are most effective? Clearly, solid research is essential if this transforming way of teaching and learning is to be fully integrated into American schooling and youth development institutions. The National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC) took a first step toward joining service-learning practice with research in 1983. In 1991, NYLC created a center which initiated and encouraged program evaluation, formative research that informs and improves practice, and summative studies that measure results. This volume grew out of a National Service-Learning Conference--an annual event convened by the NYLC. A day long research seminar at the conference brought together researchers to discuss the latest developments among themselves and with practitioners. Impressive in their range and rigor, their papers offer documentation and analysis useful to an emerging research knowledge base. It is a starting point for the evidence needed to firmly establish service-learning for K-12 age people as a widely accepted way of teaching and learning.
