Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reveries Over Childhood and Youth Sometimes when I remember a relative that I have been fond of, or a strange incident of the past, I wander here and there till I have some body to talk to. Presently I notice that my lis tener is bored; but now that I have written it out, I may even begin to forget it all. In any case, because one can always close a book, my friend need not be bored. I have changed nothing to my knowledge; and yet it must be that I have changed many things With out my knowledge, for I am writing after so many years, and have consulted neither friend nor letter nor old newspaper and describe What comes often est into my memory. I say this fearing that some surviving friend of my youth may remember something in a different shape and be offended with my book. Book excerpt: Under the influence of the lyrical drama of Medieval Japan called "Noh (N'gaku)," William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) wrote ten short plays to be performed for small elite audiences. These plays constitute his "noble theatre." They fall into two generations. Six plays belong to the first generation: At the Hawk's Well (1917), The only Jealousy of Emer (1919), The Dreaming of the Bones (1919), Calvary (1920), The Cat and the Moon (1926), a farce, and Resurrection (1931). The second generation comprises four plays: A Full Moon in March (1935), The King of the Great Clock Tower (1935), Purgatory (1939), and The Death of Cuchulain (1939).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study traces the shaping presence of cultural interactions, arguing that American literature has become a hybridization of Eastern and Western literary traditions. Cultural exchanges between the East and West began in the early decades of the nineteenth century as American transcendentalists explored Eastern philosophies and arts. Hakutani examines this influence through the works of Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman. He further demonstrates the East-West exchange through discussions of the interactions by modernists such as Yone Noguchi, Yeats, Pound, Camus, and Kerouac. Finally, he argues that African American literature, represented by Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, and James Emanuel, is postmodern. Their works exhibit their concerted efforts to abolish marginality and extend referentiality, exemplifying the postmodern East-West crossroads of cultures. A fuller understanding of their work is gained by situating them within this cultural conversation. The writings of Wright, for example, take on their full significance only when they are read, not as part of a national literature, but as an index to an evolving literature of cultural exchanges.
Book Synopsis The Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde by : Dr Jarlath Killeen
Download or read book The Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde written by Dr Jarlath Killeen and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oscar Wilde's two collections of children's literature, The Happy Prince and Other Stories (1888) and A House of Pomegranates (1891), have often been marginalised in critical accounts as their apparently conservative didacticism appears at odds with the characterisation of Wilde as an amoral aesthete. In this, the first full-length study of Wilde's fairy tales for children, Jarlath Killeen argues that Wilde's stories are neither uniformly conservative nor subversive, but a blend of both. Killeen contends that while they should be read in relation to a literary tradition of fairy tales that emerged in nineteenth century Europe; Irish issues heavily influenced the work. These issues were powerfully shaped by the 'folk Catholicism' Wilde encountered in the west of Ireland. By resituating the fairy tales in a complex nexus of theological, political, social, and national concerns, Killeen restores the tales to their proper place in the Wilde canon.
