Book Synopsis Samuel Richardson as Anonymous Editor and Printer by : John A. Dussinger
Download or read book Samuel Richardson as Anonymous Editor and Printer written by John A. Dussinger and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first two decades of his career, Richardson’s role as printer was hardly limited to setting the type for the periodicals that issued from his shop. Perhaps the most glaring evidence of his intervention in producing text is the fact that both The True Briton (1723-24) and The Weekly Miscellany (1732-41) just happen to have letters supposedly from women who protest the legal restraints against their participation in the public sphere. Neither the Duke of Wharton, the owner of The True Briton, nor William Webster, the desperately impecunious producer of The Weekly Miscellany, launched their journals with the objective of advancing radical views about political equality for women. But almost inadvertently this middle-aged, rotund printer at Salisbury Court was quietly feminizing journalism. After his first experiments in Wharton’s anti-Walpole journal he developed his satiric powers in the Miscellany by creating not only his own feisty counterpart to Pope’s coquette Belinda but even partnering with Sarah Chapone’s subversive Delia. As an outlier in what was perceived to be a corrupt, predatory political world, Richardson readily assumed a female voice to express his resistance.

Book excerpt: What we propose doing in this book, namely, to make a serious attempt to assist some of those who have inhaled the poisonous fumes of infidelity and been left in a state of mental indecision concerning sacred things. Our principal object will be to set forth some of the numerous indications that the Bible is something far superior to any human production, and give some of the rules which require to be heeded if the Scriptures are to be properly interpreted; and though their scope will go beyond the general title of ""Divine revelation,"" yet they will complement and complete the earlier ones.

Book Synopsis The Age of Revelation by : Elias Boudinot
Download or read book The Age of Revelation written by Elias Boudinot and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boudinot's passionate defense of Christianity is as fresh, forceful and convincing now as the day it first appeared. Authored by Elias Boudinot as a response to Thomas Payne's The Age of Reason, The Age of Revelation is a spirited defense of Christian beliefs and principles from the perspective of a believer who had spent decades in the service of the church. Elias Boudinot was a distinguished statesman whose adherence to traditional beliefs was unstinting throughout his life. Boudinot's response is lengthy and measured, tackling Payne's thesis point-by-point. The tone he strikes is one of calm conviction, wherein he sets out a case for Christianity and against the various skeptical arguments of Payne. He demonstrates that Payne's views are not new or novel, and opines that had Payne not published the popular book Common Sense a few years prior that The Age of Reason would never have experienced a strong reception.
Book Synopsis The Varieties of Religious Experience by : William James
Download or read book The Varieties of Religious Experience written by William James and published by The Floating Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvard psychologist and philosopher William James' The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature explores the nature of religion and, in James' observation, its divorce from science when studied academically. After publication in 1902 it quickly became a canonical text of philosophy and psychology, remaining in print through the entire century. "Scientific theories are organically conditioned just as much as religious emotions are; and if we only knew the facts intimately enough, we should doubtless see 'the liver' determining the dicta of the sturdy atheist as decisively as it does those of the Methodist under conviction anxious about his soul. When it alters in one way the blood that percolates it, we get the Methodist, when in another way, we get the atheist form of mind."
