Book excerpt: How does soil, as an ecological element, shape culture? With the sixteenth-century shift in England from an agrarian economy to a trade economy, what changes do we see in representations of soil as reflected in the language and stories during that time? This collection brings focused scholarly attention to conceptions of soil in the early modern period, both as a symbol and as a feature of the physical world, aiming to correct faulty assumptions that cloud our understanding of early modern ecological thought: that natural resources were then poorly understood and recklessly managed, and that cultural practices developed in an adversarial relationship with natural processes. Moreover, these essays elucidate the links between humans and the lands they inhabit, both then and now.

Download or read book Scimitar Strike written by J.L. Graham and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-03-11 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Iranian Quds Force enlists the help of Iranian expatriate Ash Esfahani to arrange for a cartel hit man. The mission is to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States. The plot is uncovered, and the FBI and DEA infiltrate using undercover agent Victor "V-Rod" Rodriquez, aka Hector Cruz. After gaining the trust of the Iranian expatriate, Cruz must now gain the trust of Quds Force operative Ali Falahian. As the story evolves, the motivation and intent of the Iranian planners is exposed. In 2020, Quds Force Commander Qassem Soleimani was assassinated by a US missile strike. In retaliation, the regime developed "Thirteen Revenge Scenarios." The Iranian public and leadership were led to believe Soleimani's death lay solely at the feet of the American government, but the general's death has ties back to the IRGC. Soleimani's successor, Abdul Reza Sasani's motives are suspect. His rise to senior Quds Force general to replace Soleimani was, by all accounts, natural and expected--only Falahian has long suspected Sasani's role in his mentor's death and has vowed to retaliate. Ali Falahian has a storied past. As a young intelligence officer in Iraq, he orchestrated the Iranian IED campaign that resulted in many hundreds of US casualties. He was also instrumental in the attack on the Karbala Communication Compound that led to the death of several US military and CIA personnel. CIA operator David James "D. J." Dixon has been hunting Falahian ever since. The assassination attempt on the Saudi ambassador is not the only threat facing the FBI's National Joint Terrorism Task Force. While the NJTTF chases down intelligence leads and attempts to thwart an attack, Ali Falahian moves on to the next of the "Thirteen Revenge Scenarios."

Download or read book Making a Noise written by John Tusa and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Tusa is a distinguished journalist, broadcaster and leader of arts organisations, best remembered for his times at the BBC, including creating Newsnight. Tusa's memoir is etched with candour. His account of two years of internecine warfare at the top of the BBC under the Chairman, 'Dukey' Hussey will go down as a major contribution to BBC history. His recollections of a hilarious and petty-minded few months as head of a Cambridge college will be read as a case study of the absurdities of academic life; while running the rejected and maligned Barbican Centre, Tusa led its recovery into the major cultural centre that it is today.
Book Synopsis Advances in Microbial Ecology by : J.G. Jones
Download or read book Advances in Microbial Ecology written by J.G. Jones and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were many who joked when we took over Advances in Microbial Ecology at Volume 13; perhaps they should have reserved their expressions of superstition for Volume 14. As an example of British understatement, I think it would be fair to say that we have had a little bad luck. Never have I known a volume so bedeviled with misfortune, but we have been similarly fortunate in the patience exhibited by our authors, particularly those who were "first in line" with their chapters. It would be inappropriate to burden the reader with the catalogue of accidents and illnesses; suffice it to say that considerable experience has been gained in contingency planning. We feel particularly delighted that the final product is a balanced volume, maintaining the tradition of Advances in Microbial Ecology in providing something for everyone. The chapters range from the strategies of growth to the role of microbes in maintaining sustainable agriculture, the significance of a single biochemical process to the complexities of coping with a wide range of substrates.

Book Synopsis Holding and Psychoanalysis by : Joyce Anne Slochower
Download or read book Holding and Psychoanalysis written by Joyce Anne Slochower and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Holding and Psychoanalysis: A Relational Perspective, Joyce Slochower brings a contemporary relational framework to bear on Winnicott's notion of the analytic holding environment. She presents a fresh, thought-provoking, and clinically useful integration of Winnicott's seminal insights with contemporary relational and feminist/psychoanalytic contributions. Seeking to broaden the concept of holding beyond work with severely regressed patients, she addresses holding in a variety of clinical contexts and focuses especially on holding processes in relation to issues of dependence, self-involvement, and hate. She also considers clinical work with patients "on the edge" - patients who seem deperately to need a holding experience that remains paradoxically elusive. Slochower begins her study by questioning the therapeutic limitations of an interactive style. There are times, she proposes, when certain patients simply cannot tolerate evidence of the analyst's separate subjective presence and instead need a holding experience. Though this holding function is essential to work with difficult patients, it enters into the treatment of all patients, whether as figure or ground. Slochower's relational understanding of holding leads her to consider the impact of holding on patient and analyst alike. Throughout, she emphasizes the analyst's and the patient's co-construction, during moments of holding, of an essential illusion of analytic attunement; this illusion serves to protect the patient from potentially disruptive aspects of the analyst's subjective presence. Slochower's case vignettes helpfully illuminate the intersubjective aspects of the holding process, including the clinical picture when a holding frame fails. She elaborates her thesis by considering the therapeutic function of holding in mourning. And she concludes her study with a cogent examination of the theoretical and clinical limitations of working with a holding process. A welcome reprise on an essential Winnicottian theme, Holding and Psychoanalysis broadens and deepens our understanding of the therapeutic role of the analyst's holding function.
