Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charting the evolution of the port cities of Atlantic Spain and Portugal over four centuries, this book examines the often dynamic interaction between the large privileged ports of Lisbon, Seville and Cadiz (the Metropoles) and the smaller ports of, among others, Oporto, Corunna and Santander (the Second Tier). The book particularly focuses on the implications of state-sponsored commercial policies for the main ports of Atlantic Iberia during the monopoly period extending from 1503 to c.1778, and briefly considers the implications of the suppression of monopoly for these centres over the remainder of the nineteenth century. Patrick O'Flanagan employs a wealth of source material to provide a multi-faceted survey of the growth of these port cities, moving deftly from local concerns to regional developments and global relationships. Beyond Spain and Portugal, the book also considers the important role played by the Atlantic archipelagoes of the Canaries, the Azores and Madeira. This formidable study is an essential addition to the library of those studying Atlantic Iberia, historical geography, and transatlantic economic relationships of this period.

His early ideas in town planning were largely pragmatic, seeking to address problems of the quality of life and the future traffic circulation in the historic core of his native city, Palma, and its suburbs. He inherited plans for reform from previous generations of Mallorcan planners including Eusebio Estada (1843-1917), Bernat Calvet (1864-1941) and Guillem Forteza (1892-1943) who in turn were influenced by Idelfonso Cerdá (1815-1876) the Barcelona planner and his concept of the eixample or ensanche. Some of his plan for Palma was financed by the enigmatic Juan March but under the post-Civil War policy of autarky little of what he proposed was built. However, a short sojourn in the United States at MIT in the mid-1940s brought him into contact with American and British theories. Much of his practice developed during the Franco regime, although he had little sympathy for its politics. Later, he designed few other complete town plans but his influence on the social aspects of Spanish planning in the ’50s and ’60s was considerable. His subsequent professional practice was largely devoted to urban conservation and the development of green spaces in cities and towns. His ideas are located between Anglo-Saxon planning theories and Mediterranean urbanismo, when town planning as a discipline began to emerge from its origins in engineering and architecture as part of its transition from planeamientos to proyectos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the sixteenth century Spain was at the height of its glory, enjoying a period of exceptional power, wealth, and artistic splendor. In 1561 Philip II commissioned Europe's leading topographical artist, Anton van den Wyngaerde, to prepare cities and towns of his Golden Age empire. Van den Wyngaerde spent most of his time traveling in Spain from 1561 until his death in 1571, preparing views—many the earliest known depictions—of no fewer than sixty-two cities and towns, including Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza, Granada, Córoba, Seville, Toledo, Burgos, and Madrid. These drawings not only record Spain's cities during the most glorious moments in their history but also depict them with a precision that can almost be described as photographic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book describes the sources and methods used in historical urban studies, including an evaluation of the total size estimates, area, institutional factors, and volume of local activity. Illustrations of maps that locate large cities from several time tables and regions of the world are also provided. This text likewise covers the data sheets for ancient cities from 1360 B.C. to 200 B.C. and 100 A.D. to 622 A.D. The data sheets from 800 to 1850 A.D. provide estimates for countries such as Italy, Afghanistan, France, Brazil, India, and Russia. Other topics include the world's largest cities from 430 B.C. to200 B.C., top six cities in each continent from 800 to 1850, and whereabouts of unfamiliar cities not shown on the maps. This publication is a good source for sociologists, historians, and researchers interested in population studies.

This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in the first part of this volume, two being a revised English version of an article originally in Spanish, examine the place of the city in the historical development of Castile. The focus is the social and economic history of Burgos, and the work is founded on detailed research in the archives of the area. Professor Ruiz also calls into question the long held belief in the democratic character of medieval Castilian municipal life. In the second section he opens the field of enquiry to deal with the controversial question of what impact the conquest of Seville and the subsequent settlement of al-Andalus had on the realm of Castile, looking in particular at demographic factors and the emergence of the latifundia. The following articles analyse the symbolism and ceremonial of royal power, arguing that the claims for a sacred monarchy so usual in the medieval West were absent during this period of Spanish history, and that the kings used popular secular ceremonies, not anointments or coronations, to legitimise their rule. The book then closes with a study of the origins of the Spanish Inquisition.
