En el nuevo escenario (muy diferente a aquel en el que nació la disciplina), los productos manufacturados de forma masiva, que en algún momento atrajeron la atención del consumidor, van siendo dejados de lado en favor de otros fabricados a medida de los deseos del comprador. Con una mayor competencia y la creciente globalización, la libertad de elección también se amplía. Un hipermercado europeo promedio ofrece hoy un escaparate de opciones de 40.000 líneas de productos, con un 5% - 10% de ellas cambiando cada año. Para llegar hasta sus clientes, las compañías han desarrollado nuevas modalidades de comunicación yendo más allá de los medios convencionales de publicidad en televisión, radio y prensa. Las compañías patrocinan hoy prácticamente cualquier cosa: el metro en las grandes ciudades, los carritos de los supermercados, las entradas para el cine, etc. Además, han surgido nuevas vías para canalizar la información, como internet, el correo electrónico o los mensajes de texto. Los nuevos consumidores se defienden contra este creciente flujo de mensajes comerciales simplemente ignorándolos. La tecnología en este caso se pone de su parte y les permite en muchos casos filtrar los mensajes que reciben. De ahí que los anuncios publicitarios se hayan reducido y las abreviaturas, los logos, los ritmos y los colores configuren el nuevo lenguaje de los mensajes comerciales, diseñados específicamente para explotar este corto período de atención. Por desgracia, muchos especialistas en Marketing están reaccionando con excesiva lentitud para hacer frente a estas nuevas tendencias. Muchos departamentos de Marketing no han sido capaces todavía de reconocer que algo se ha roto y necesita ser reparado. El modelo basado en mensajes difundidos masivamente y la diferenciación de los productos se han vuelto ineficaces. El impacto de la publicidad tradicional ha decrecido en los países desarrollados como resultado directo del espectacular aumento de los mensajes que las personas reciben a diario. La nueva generación de consumidores alberga mayores expectativas y se desilusiona más rápidamente. Exigen de una compañía que sea capaz de interactuar con ellos en el momento en que lo necesitan; esperan poder ellos mismos adaptar el servicio a sus necesidades antes ya de que se les transmita cómo funcionará; investigan a los diferentes proveedores de un servicio antes de comprometerse con uno; quieren un servicio excelente en cualquier momento. Para una empresa, el costo de no cumplir con estas expectativas es alto: los clientes no sólo la dejarán a un lado, sino que persuadirán a otros de hacer lo propio. Para obtener la fidelidad de un cliente es preciso centrar la atención en su experiencia. La sensibilidad y la capacidad de respuesta han de reemplazar a ese otro modelo de presión en el que es necesario vender a toda costa para generar negocio. El Marketing debe comprometer toda su atención a lo largo del ciclo completo: no sólo en la publicidad y en los puntos de venta, sino también mediante los centros de servicio al cliente, el contacto postventa, los empleados de apoyo, etc. Es imprescindible abrirse a toda la diversidad de canales para llegar al consumidor y no mantenerse limitados a los tradicionales. Los costos de cada canal, los niveles de servicio y la eficacia son los factores que determinarán el canal idóneo en cada ocasión.
