This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study documents evidence of a decline trend in the international competitiveness of US industry. The analysis identifies three groups of countries that account for most of the US trade deficit in the 1980s: the surplus countries, Germany and Japan; the East Asian NICs; and the Latin American debtors. In each case the author points to underlying structural problems contributing to the deficit. They call for quite different US policy responses, including microeconomic and industrial policies, incentives to revive productivity, growth and technological innovation, import surcharges, wage increases in the NICs, currency realignments, US capital exports, and debt relief. A pragmatic policy approach, with efforts to open foreign markets, aims to achieve the greatest possible reduction in the trade deficit with the lowest possible cost from macroeconomic adjustments. The author urges the reversal of two adverse trends in his policy strategy: the decline in public sector investment and the decreasing progressivity of the tax code.

Download or read book A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy written by Karl Marx and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Step into the intellectual realm of Karl Marx's groundbreaking work, 'A Contribution to the Critique of Political Economy'. This influential book presents a meticulous analysis and critique of the prevailing economic theories of the time, notably those championed by renowned economists Adam Smith and David Ricardo. While considered of secondary importance within Marx's extensive oeuvre, the Preface of the Critique unveils one of his central theories—the materialist conception of history. Marx posits that the economic foundation of society shapes its political and ideological superstructure, intricately intertwining the realms of production, politics, and social consciousness. With a nuanced perspective that transcends simplistic determinism, this work challenges prevailing notions and ignites new avenues of inquiry into the intricate dynamics between economics and society.
Book Synopsis Fixed or Flexible Exchange Rates? History and Perspectives by : Marin Muzhani

This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compares and contrasts flexible versus fixed exchange rate regimes. Beginning with their theoretical justifications, it showcases their observed advantages and disadvantages as they played out in the currency crises of the 1990s and early 2000s across Asia, Europe and Latin America. An analysis of the drivers and implications of these crises singles out fast-paced liberalization and globalization as having played central roles. Moreover it sheds light on some of the factors contributing to the 2008 financial crisis and the key monetary events in its aftermath. An accessible, yet rigorous discussion, supported by extensive evidence, helps readers reach their own conclusions regarding the respective merits of alternative exchange rate systems.
