This is a busy age, and we have no time to give to the man without a message. This is true alike of the preacher, the politician, the philosopher and the bookmaker; hence the author feels it his duty, before asking the reader to go with him through the following pages, to tell him why they were written. They were written: 1. Because we need a brief history. Richardson's great work, "Memoirs of A. Campbell," a classic of its kind, and a book with a permanent place in literature, has 1,248 pages. The masses will not read it because of its size. Only the preacher and teacher, and not all of them, will read it. Moore's "Comprehensive History of the Disciples of Christ," of one volume, has 860 pages, and is therefore subject to the same objections. The demand is for a book not half so large as these, and yet sufficiently large to give a clear conception of this Restoration movement. 2. Because we need a later history. Richardson's "Memoirs" were written in 1868, almost a half century in the past, and we need the wonderful story of the almost half century since that time. These are probably the only two things most people know about him (if they even know those). This book seeks to correct that-and not necessarily just put-ting Barton W. Stone back into his place in Restoration Movement history, but also his whole movement, which included more men than just him. The "New Light" Christians never referred to themselves by that name, but the author of this book uses it as a convenient way to distinguish them from other localized groups who also called themselves "Christians" or the "Christian Church" (specifically, James O'Kelly's "Christian Church" in the south, and Abner Jones and Elias Smith's "Christian Church" or "Christian Connexion" in New England). So don't let his use of the name cloud your view of the information. The author was connected with the Disciples of Christ, the most liberal branch of the Restoration Movement, but this fact does not come across in the following pages. All footnotes are original to this work, except for ones marked "Editor," which have been added for this updated edition. In Race and Restoration: Churches of Christ and the Black Freedom Struggle, Barclay Key focuses on how these churches managed race relations during the Jim Crow era and how they adapted to the dramatic changes of the 1960s. Although most religious organizations grappled with changing attitudes toward race, the Churches of Christ had singular struggles. Fundamentally “restorationist,” these exclusionary churches perceived themselves as the only authentic expression of Christianity, compelling them to embrace peoples of different races, even as they succumbed to prevailing racial attitudes. The Churches of Christ thus offer a unique perspective for observing how Christian fellowship and human equality intersected during the civil rights era. Key reveals how racial attitudes and practices within individual congregations elude the simple categorizations often employed by historians. Besides these four, numerous smaller fragments, typically one-article splinter groups, decorate the history of the Restoration Movement: One-Cup brethren, Premillennialists, No-Sunday-School congregations, No-Located-Preacher churches, and others. This movement to unite Christians on the basis of faith and immersion in Jesus Christ, and to restore New-Testament Christianity, is too little recognized on the American religious landscape, and it has been too little studied by the academic community.
