It sustains the country's textile industry which is perhaps the largest segment of organized industries in the country. India earns substantial foreign exchange from exports of cotton yarn, thread, fabrics, apparel and made-ups. Rainfed agriculture accounts for more than 70% of cotton cultivation. The characteristic feature of rainfed agriculture id insufficient and erratic rainfall. Subsoiling breaks the hard pan or compact layer present in the profile and helps in sinking down of the rainwater in the lower layer of soil, which helps in better storage of soil moisture. Broad bed and furrow improve infiltration of rainwater and thus helps to improve moisture storage in soil profile. When supply of water is limited, irrigation is applied through alternate furrow. Mulches improve soil water by reducing evaporation losses. To bridge the research gaps highlighted above, the present investigation entitled "Response of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) to subsoiling, land configuration, irrigation and mulch" was undertaken.

Download or read book Physiology of Cotton written by James McD. Stewart and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-11-04 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cotton production today is not to be undertaken frivolously if one expects to profit by its production. If cotton production is to be sustainable and produced profitably, it is essential to be knowledgeable about the growth and development of the cotton plant and in the adaptation of cultivars to the region as well as the technology available. In addition, those individuals involved in growing cotton should be familiar with the use of management aids to know the most profitable time to irrigate, apply plant growth regulators, herbicides, foliar fertilizers, insecticides, defoliants, etc. The chapters in this book were assembled to provide those dealing with the production of cotton with the basic knowledge of the physiology of the plant required to manage the cotton crop in a profitable manner.

Download or read book Subsoil Management Techniques written by Bobby A. Stewart and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-10-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principles and practice of deep tillage techniques have often failed to provide long-term, sustainable improvements of the soil for crop production. The book reviews alternative approaches to overcoming subsoil problems. These approaches involve reduced disturbance of the soil, but still provide substantial and sustainable soil improvements. Chapters 1 through 4 discuss the use of minimum tillage, bed farming, mole drainage, and slotting to overcome adverse subsoil conditions. Chapter 5 examines the options available for management of subsoil acidity. The next chapter provides an understanding of the processes involved in stress transmission and compaction under farm trafficking. The last chapter explains the critical role of soil microorganisms in providing long-term biological stabilization and improvements of soil. This reference brings together the latest research information on these subsoil amelioration techniques.
