Book Synopsis Cityscapes and Perceptual Dialectology by : Jennifer Cramer

This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection presents papers relating to the state of the art in Perceptual Dialectology research. The authors take an international view of the field of Perceptual Dialectology, broadly defined, to assess the similarities and contrasts in non-linguists’ perceptions of the dialect landscape. The volume is global in focus, and chapters discuss data gathered in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, and South Korea. The common methods used by many of the contributors means that readers will be able to draw comparisons from the breadth of the volume. The primary focus of this volume is geared toward an examination of dialect perceptions in and of cities, with an additional goal of presenting empirical, theoretical, and methodological advancements in Perceptual Dialectology. Authors’ contributions to the collection examine how the urban setting influences perceptions of linguistic variation and, in the course of examining the connections between place and perceptions, explore several interrelated themes of linguistic variation, including the differences in the perception of rural and urban areas, processes of perception and language change, and the relationship between perception and ‘reality’.

Book Synopsis Archäologie offenbart by : Tobias Kaempf
Download or read book Archäologie offenbart written by Tobias Kaempf and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The reclining marble statue of the early Christian virgin martyr Cecilia, completed by the Holy Year of 1600 and still in its original setting in the Roman basilica bearing the saint’s name, has long been recognised as a seminal work in Western art. Yet its cultural, religious, social and political background has never been comprehensively investigated. This interdisciplinary analysis explores the constellation of forces that shaped the genesis, meaning and early reception of the sculpture – a funeral image for both its donor, Cardinal Paolo Camillo Sfondrato, and Cecilia – as well as its impact on the church interior and the contemporary viewer. The cult image emerges as a synthesis of an epoch that is fundamental to our understanding of early modern culture.
Book Synopsis Gender and Far Right Politics in Europe by : Michaela Köttig
Download or read book Gender and Far Right Politics in Europe written by Michaela Köttig and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a systematic consideration of the link between the extreme right and the discourse about developments in regard to gender issues within different national states. The contributors analyze right-wing extremist tendencies in Europe under the specific perspective on gender. The volume brings together the few existing findings concerning the quantitative dimension of activities carried out by men and women in different countries, and illuminates and juxtaposes gender ratios along with the role of women in right-wing extremism. Along with the gender-specific access to right-wing groups, the chapters look at networks, organizational forms, specific strategies of female right-wing extremists, their ideologies (especially regarding femininity and masculinity), hetero normativity, discourses on sexuality, and preventive and counter-strategies. The book will be of use to students and scholars interested in gender and politics, European politics, and political extremism.
Book Synopsis Das Arkansas Echo by : Kathleen Condray
Download or read book Das Arkansas Echo written by Kathleen Condray and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century, a thriving immigrant population supported three German-language weekly newspapers in Arkansas. Most traces of the community those newspapers served disappeared with assimilation in the ensuing decades—but luckily, the complete run of one of the weeklies, Das Arkansas Echo, still exists, offering a lively picture of what life was like for this German immigrant community. “Das Arkansas Echo”: A Year in the Life of Germans in the Nineteenth-Century South examines topics the newspaper covered during its inaugural year. Kathleen Condray illuminates the newspaper’s crusade against Prohibition, its advocacy for the protection of German schools and the German language, and its promotion of immigration. We also learn about aspects of daily living, including food preparation and preservation, religion, recreation, the role of women in the family and society, health and wellness, and practical housekeeping. And we see how the paper assisted German speakers in navigating civic life outside their immigrant community, including the racial tensions of the post-Reconstruction South. “Das Arkansas Echo”: A Year in the Life of Germans in the Nineteenth-Century South offers a fresh perspective on the German speakers who settled in a modernizing Arkansas. Mining a valuable newspaper archive, Condray sheds light on how these immigrants navigated their new identity as southern Americans.
Book Synopsis The Diversity of Social Pedagogy in Europe by : Jacob Kornbeck
Download or read book The Diversity of Social Pedagogy in Europe written by Jacob Kornbeck and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2009 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated at the intersection between social work and education, social pedagogy is an original and dynamic academic and professional tradition. It can be found across most European countries and shows great variety, being closely connected to specific national - and sometimes even regional cultures and structures. Yet despite this diversity, social pedagogy also has many common features, cross-nationally. The aim of the book is to illustrate this diversity via a selection of case studies from Denmark, France, Germany, Poland and Sweden. Although social pedagogy is, in many countries, a profession that represents a sizeable workforce, very little has been written about it from a European perspective. Comparative literature tends to look at social work, whereby social pedagogy is obscured. But while there is a lack of comparative social pedagogy literature, interest in social pedagogy is growing. This is particularly so in the United Kingdom where no social pedagogy tradition exists but policy developments point to the emergence of a social pedagogy paradigm both in academia and in terms of careers. This book aims to help fill the gap. Case studies deal with theoretical and practical aspects of social pedagogy, professional education, fields of practice and research as well as links with other academic and professional paradigms.
