Book Synopsis Australia's Water Resources by : John Pigram
Download or read book Australia's Water Resources written by John Pigram and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2007-05-25 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia’s Water Resources seeks to explore the circumstances underpinning the profound reorientation of attitudes and relationships to water that has taken place in Australia in recent decades. The changing emphasis from development to management of water resources continues to evolve and is reflected in a series of public policy initiatives directed towards rational, efficient and sustainable use of the nation's water. Australia is now recognised as a pacesetter in water reform. Administrative restructuring, water pricing, water markets and trade, integrated water resources management, and the emergence of the private sector, are features of a more economically sound and environmentally compatible water industry. It is important that these changes are documented and their rationale and effectiveness explained. This timely work provides an important synthesis of these issues. This revised paperback edition is a fully corrected reprint of the hardback edition.
Book Synopsis Murray River Country by : Jessica K. Weir
Download or read book Murray River Country written by Jessica K. Weir and published by Aboriginal Studies Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Place, country, and care are at the heart of this wise book, which is so astutely responsive to the diverse, active Aboriginal individuals and nations of the Murray-Darling Basin Like the Central Valley of California near where I live, where vast rivers and wetlands have been engineered to produce a precarious and poisoned breadbasket for settler empires, the Murray-Darling Basin cries out for new practices of care from all of its people. Weir's book gives me hope that these blasted places and the lives of so many species, human and not, might again be whole, in new ways and old. Donna Haraway, History of Consciousness Department, University of California at Santa Cruz Murray River Country brings a fresh narrative to Australia's water crisis - the intimate stories of love and loss of the Aboriginal people who know the inland rivers as their traditional country. The Murray River's devastation demands that something fundamental changes in our water philosophies. Weir moves readers beyond questions of how much water will be `returned' to the rivers, to understand that our economy, and our lives, are dependent on river health. She draws on western and Indigenous knowledge traditions to unsettle the boundaries of the current debates. In doing so she shows how powerfully influential yet unacknowledged assumptions continue to trap our thinking and disable us from taking effective action. By engaging with the Murray-Darling Basin, Australia's agricultural heartland, and the Murray River, Australia's greatest river, Murray River Country goes to the heart of our national understandings of how we are to live in this country.
Book Synopsis Integrated Water Resources Management in Practice by : Roberto Lenton
Download or read book Integrated Water Resources Management in Practice written by Roberto Lenton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Better water management will be crucial if we are to meet many of the key challenges of this century - feeding the worlds growing population and reducing poverty, meeting water and sanitation needs, protecting vital ecosystems, all while adapting to climate change. The approach known as Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) is widely recognized as the best way forward, but is poorly understood, even within the water sector. Since a core IWRM principle is that good water management must involve the water users, the understanding and involvement of other sectors is critical for success. There is thus an urgent need for practical guidance, for both water and development professionals, based on real world examples, rather than theoretical constructs. That is what this book provides. Using case studies, the book illustrates how better water management, guided by the IWRM approach, has helped to meet a wide range of sustainable development goals. It does this by considering practical examples, looking at how IWRM has contributed, at different scales, from very local, village-level experiences to reforms at national level and beyond to cases involving trans-boundary river basins. Using these on-the-ground experiences, from both developed and developing countries in five continents, the book provides candid and practical lessons for policy-makers, donors, and water and development practitioners worldwide, looking at how IWRM principles were applied, what worked, and, equally important, what didn‘t work, and why. Book Synopsis Water Resources Perspectives: Evaluation, Management and Policy by : W.W. Wood
Download or read book Water Resources Perspectives: Evaluation, Management and Policy written by W.W. Wood and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-12-09 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many countries in the world have made great efforts, to remedy the water shortage, by providing financial and technical backing, for water desalination, treatment of wastewater and improved management and conservation techniques. Water ministries, universities and research centres have supported scientific research, and applied the most recent technologies, in search of new and alternative water supplies. Laws have been promulgated, economic and public relation campaigns developed, to promote and encourage the practice of efficient water use and the conservation of this scarce commodity. This book covers water resources and management and provides a new vision of water resources management, water conservation and legislations, water law, and modern techniques of water resources investigation.
Book Synopsis The Ecology of River Systems by : Bryan R. Davies
Download or read book The Ecology of River Systems written by Bryan R. Davies and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of the ecology of running waters has come a long way during the past few years. From being a largely descriptive subject, with a few under tones concerned with such things as fisheries, pollution or control of blackflies, it has evolved into a discipline with hypotheses, such as the River Continuum Concept (Vannote et a/. 1980), and even a book suggesting that it offers opportunity for the testing of ecological theory (Barnes & Minshall 1983). However, perusal of the literature reveals that, although some of the very early studies were concerned with large rivers (references in Hynes 1970), the great mass of the work that has been done on running water has been on streams and small rivers, and information on larger rivers is either on such limited topics as fisheries or plankton, scattered among the journals, or not available to the general limnologist. The only exceptions are a few books in this series of publications, such as those on the Nile (Rz6ska 1976), the Volga (Morduckai Boltovskoi 1979) and the Amazon {Sioli 1984), and the recent compendium by Whitton (1984) on European rivers, among which there are a few that rate as large.
