Book excerpt: This research focuses on the development of Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering spectroscopy (RIXS) as a tool in homogeneous catalysis by looking at 3d transition metal compounds and specifically Cr(salen) epoxidation catalysts. Previous studies have demonstrated the sensitivity of transition metal K-edge X-ray absorption pre-edge and edge features to their chemical environment, but the exact origins are unassigned. The aim of this study is to bring together a collection of complementary, and some novel, X-ray techniques to assign these features and obtain more detailed structural and electronic information on the systems under investigation. Novel high energy resolution data on transition metal complexes have been obtained and the pre-edge region has been simulated with the FEFF9 multiple scattering code. The increase in spectral structure compared to normal XANES allows for a more detailed analysis and as such, provides detailed insights in the electronic properties. L-edge XAS data obtained using soft X-rays enabled the determination of crystal field parameters, which were compared with other X-ray (RIXS) and optical absorption techniques. The novel RIXS experiments provide L and K-edge spectra unaffected by lifetime broadening or background from the main absorption edge. 2D images of X-ray emission as a function of absorption are obtained, revealing the relationship between them and providing direct and detailed information on the presence and position of molecular orbitals. These 1s2p RIXS experiments make use of hard X-rays enabling in-situ experiments, which are important in the field of catalysis, making it a promising tool to monitor the changing electronics of the metal centre as well as ligand coordination during the catalytic process. Whereas the electronic differences on the Cr metal as a function of salen ligand are not revealed by the current RIXS experiments, which is likely due to resolution issues, new preliminary insights in the different catalytic Cr intermediates of the epoxidation reaction have been obtained.

The at room temperature grown organic layers consisted of a up to several hundred nanometer thickness, and have been studied with the experimental techniques soft x-ray emission spectroscopy (SXES) and NEXAFS-spectroscopy by means of synchrotron radiation. In particular, resonant inelastic scattering (RIXS) was employed in order to obtain possible band structure or MO-symmetry information of the studied systems. The studied materials consist of large organic molecules, evaporated under high vacuum on silicon wafers. The goal was to figure out, whether inside these organic layers the hydrocarbon molecules polymerize and form a band structure or if the hydrocarbon molecules do not interact with each other and retain their original molecular like symmetry and behavior. The discrete peaks in the hydrocarbon NEXAFS-spectra could be assigned by comparison with the literature to chemical shifted C1s→ π∗ transitions, caused by different chemical surrounded C-atoms. Hence, due to excitation on a certain π∗-resonance only C1s-electrons of equal C-atoms can be excited, which leads to a site selective excitation. The fluorescent decay of the created hole, which is as well localized on these former excited C-atoms was recorded energy dispersed in the SXE-spectrometer. This method is usually referred to as SXE. Therefore, the local MO-density was recorded. Hartree-Fock based ground state MO-calculations have been performed for each molecule, in order to simulate the SXE-spectra. Good agreement between experiment and simulation was shown, under the strict retainment of symmetry selection rules along the transitions. This result states, that the different hydrocarbon molecules conserve their symmetry and structure in an up to several hundred nanometer thick organic layer. Only in the region of the valence band maximum (π-states) weak indications for a band dispersion could be observed.

In currently operating hard x-ray scattering instruments the energy and momentum transfers are measured while the outgoing polarization is not measured due to significant technical challenges. But the outgoing polarization of the scattered photons provides valuable information about the states involved in the scattering which is difficult to determine without polarization analysis. Polarization analysis has proved extremely valuable in soft x-ray scattering and so a polarization analysis system is being developed to fill the technical void at higher energies. A polarization analyzer is designed to reflect the scattered photons from the main analyzer by about 90 degrees. At this reflecting angle, the in-plane polarization is naturally eliminated by the polarization factor so that the scattered photons perpendicular to the reflection plane are fully obtained. Therefore it can separate the two orthogonal polarizations by rotating the system by 90 degrees. The research in this dissertation is about the development of an outgoing polarization analysis system complementing for the current RIXS instrument at Advanced Photon Source. The polarization analysis system developed includes the x-ray polarization analyzer and the mechanics attached to the RIXS spectrometers and for aligning the polarization analyzer. A variety of diffraction-based polarization analyzers are being developed for different x-ray absorption edges. A polarization analyzer for Cu K-edge has been developed, and one for the Ir L3-edge has also been developed. By separating the outgoing polarization, the strong polarization dependent electron excitations, e.g. the spin-orbital excitations in iridates can be measured by the polarization analysis system. Further, the system enables us to separate and study the transverse and longitudinal magnons in Sr2IrO4, demonstrating a new capability for the RIXS technique.

Unlike other techniques that are sensitive to electron-phonon interactions, RIXS can give access to momentum dependent coupling constants. Information about the dispersion of the electron-phonon interaction is highly desirable in the context of understanding anisotropic conventional and unconventional superconductivity.We considered the phonon contribution to RIXS from the theoretical point of view. In contrast to previous studies, we emphasize the role of the core-hole lattice coupling. Our model, with parameters obtained from first principles, shows that even in the case of a deep core-hole, RIXS probes exciton-phonon coupling rather than a direct electron-phonon coupling.This difference leads to quantitative and qualitative deviations from the interpretation of the implied electron-phonon coupling from the standard view expressed in the literature. Thus, our objective is to develop a rigorous approach to quantify electron-phonon coupling within the context of RIXS measurements. The ability to accurately reproduce experimental results from first-principles calculations, without recourse to adjustable parameters, should be viewed as the ultimate test of a proper understanding of the phonon contribution to RIXS.We start by considering only the core-hole--phonon interaction within the context of X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. We combine an ab initio calculation of the real-space response function with many-body Green's functions techniques to reproduce the vibrational side-bands in SiX4 (X=H, F) molecules. The approach we developed is suitable for application to crystalline materials.We next consider the phonon contribution to X-ray absorption spectra. Unlike the charged excitations generated by X-ray photoemission, X-ray absorption creates a neutral excitation that we approximate as a core-hole and an excited electron. We first solved the electronic part of the problem on the level of the Bethe-Salpeter equation and then dressed the resulting 2-particle excitonic quasiparticle with the exciton-phonon interactions using the cumulant ansatz. The viability of this methodology was tested by calculating the N K-edge XAS of the N2 molecule and the O K-edge of acetone. The resulting vibronic spectra agreed favorably with experimental results.Finally, we construct a hybrid formulation of the RIXS cross section that preserves explicit summation over a small number of final states, but replaces the summation over intermediate states, which might be enormously expensive, with a Green's function. We develop an expansion of the Green's function and derive both analytically exact (in the no-recoil limit) and approximate solutions. The formalism was again tested on the O K-edge of acetone and agrees well with the experiment. To provide an outlook towards future work, we discuss application of the developed formalism to crystalline materials.

Book excerpt: Here, we develop a phenomenological theory to predict the characteristic features of the momentumdependent scattering amplitude in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the energy scale of the superconducting gap in iron-based super-conductors. Taking into account all relevant orbital states as well as their specific content along the Fermi surface we evaluate the charge and spin dynamical structure factors for the compounds LaOFeAs and LiFeAs, based on tight-binding models which are fully consistent with recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data. We find a characteristic intensity redistribution between charge and spin dynamical structure factors which discriminates between sign-reversing and sign-preserving quasiparticle excitations. Consequently, our results show that RIXS spectra can distinguish between s± and s++ wave gap functions in the singlet pairing case. In addition, we find that an analogous intensity redistribution at small momenta can reveal the presence of a chiral p-wave triplet pairing.

Book excerpt: One of the key ideas in the condensed matter physics at a low energy scale is to treat an interacting many-body electron system in terms of weakly interacting emergent particles, namely elementary excitations. Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) has emerged as a powerful tool to study elementary excitations, thanks to the exciting instrumentation improvement and the advent of X-ray synchrotron radiation facilities. By tuning the incident X-ray photon energy to the resonance condition of a specific element, RIXS can resonantly enhance the scattering cross section between the incident photon and the elementary excitation in the material, enabling element-specific measurements. In this dissertation, we investigated magnetic excitations in the recently discovered superconducting infinite-layer nickelate thin films. Besides a similar crystal structure, the infinite-layer nickelate is nominally isoelectronic to the high temperature cuprate superconductors. At this early stage, it is important to experimentally study the similarities and differences between cuprates and nickelates, particularly the respective electronic and magnetic structures. Here, by utilizing the high-resolution RIXS, we found that the parent compound of the infinite-layer nickelate is not a charge-transfer material, like cuprates. Instead, it is probably closer to a Mott compound with an additional coupling with rare-earth metallic states. Furthermore, we also found a branch of dispersive magnetic excitations with a bandwidth of approximately 200 meV in the parent compound nickelates. Although these modes are significantly damped, they are reminiscent of the spin-wave of strongly coupled, anti-ferromagnetically aligned spins on a square lattice. Upon doping, the spectral weight and energy decrease slightly, while the modes become overdamped. The dispersion, doping dependence, damping effect of the magnetic excitation, and the added complexity due to the presence of the rare-earth metallic pockets, together with its comparison with the magnetic excitation in cuprates, will be discussed.
