Book excerpt: Abstract: "Ultimate capacity and the post-ultimate residual strength of axially-loaded damaged (dented and/or bent) and deteriorated (corroded) tubular members were studied by conducting tests on eleven salvaged, seven fabricated and two small-scale manufactured column specimens. The nominal (specified minimum) yield stress of the specimens was either 36 or 50 ksi. The salvaged and fabricated specimens had lengths ranging from 22 to 35.4 feet and mid-thickness diameters ranging from 10.4 to 24.5 inches. The specimens had diameter-to-thickness ratios ranging from 28 to 95. All fabricated and small-scale manufactured specimens and four salvaged specimens were dented at mid-length with the dent depth varying from 5% to 15% of the diameter. Of these specimens, two were tested with fixed-ends, two with end eccentricity and nine with pinned ends. Comparison of the tests on the salvaged seamless specimens and the fabricated cold-rolled and welded specimens indicated that residual stresses apparently had little effect on the ultimate strength and the post-ultimate behavior of dented tubular columns. The seven remaining salvaged specimens were tested without denting, and of these, three were corroded, one was badly bent, and three were straight and had no corrosion and thus served as indicators of the original pre-damage strength. Several methods were used to analyze the tested specimens. Comparison with test results indicated that the analytical methods could relatively accurately predict the ultimate strength for dented and undented columns, but were conservative in estimating their post-ultimate behavior. These methods were also suitable for uniformly corroded specimens. However, the behavior of the two specimens with localized corrosion which failed by local buckling could not be predicted by these methods. A limited study was made of an approach for evaluating the effect of localized (patch) corrosion on local buckling and reduction of member strength."

Book excerpt: Abstract: "The moment-thrust-curvature (M-P-[phi]) relationship of grout-repaired dented tubular sections was studied by deriving formulas as functions of the level of deformation. Both materials, steel and concrete, were assumed to have bi-linear elastic-plastic stress-strain relationships except that the grout had no strength in tension and that its post-ultimate strain was limited by the crushing strain. Moreover, it was assumed that the strain distribution in the cross section was planar and that the axial strains in the steel shell and the grout core were fully compatible. By varying the location of the neutral axis and the value of curvature, the relationship between the axial load and curvature could be defined for a given load eccentricity. The ultimate load was given by the peak of the resultant curve. The method was applied to analyze six grouted test specimens: three dented and three undented. The resultant ultimate loads were compared with the test loads and the loads according to the formula proposed by Parsanejad. The method tended to give somewhat higher ultimate loads than the test loads. The method was then used to compute the ultimate loads for seven specimens planned in the testing program proposed for future research. A FORTRAN computer program was written to facilitate the iterative computations involved in the method."

Book excerpt: Abstract: "The structural integrity of offshore oil platforms is of concern because of the possible loss of life and ecological damage that may occur with a structural failure. Therefore, the platforms are nondestructively inspected on a periodic basis. Inspection of the platforms by conventional methods, such as, ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing, is a very labor intensive and costly procedure. Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring is a nondestructive test method that may reduce the cost of offshore evaluation of platforms. This report examines the AE characteristics of various stressed structural steels to determine the feasibility of utilizing the AE monitoring method for offshore applications. In this study, structural columns salvaged from offshore oil platforms as well as newly fabricated columns were tested. With the aid of long column, stub-column and four-point bend specimens, it has been shown that structural steels used for offshore applications exhibit bursts of acoustic emissions from the spalling of the brittle surface layers at the initiation of yielding. Therefore, overloading of a damaged column may be identified with the AE technique. The location of a damaged area on structural columns has also been successfully identified by utilizing the time of arrival analysis and triangulation methods."

Book excerpt: UNDERWATER INSPECTION AND REPAIR FOR OFFSHORE STRUCTURES Benefit from a much-needed, up-to-date handbook on underwater inspection and repair processes and technologies Underwater Inspection and Repair for Offshore Structures fills a gap in the literature to provide an overview of the inspection and repair processes for both steel and concrete offshore structures. Authors and noted experts on the topic John V. Sharp and Gerhard Esdal guide readers through the reasons why inspection and repair are performed and how both are linked to the management of structural integrity, statutory requirements, and various types of damage. The book addresses critical topics, including the execution and planning of inspection and repair, the tools and methods used, and their deployment underwater. The authors put particular focus on steel and concrete offshore oil and gas installations, but the content is also applicable to the substructures of offshore wind turbines. Underwater Inspection and Repair for Offshore Structures is complementary to the authors’ book Ageing and Life Extension of Offshore Structures, also from Wiley. This important book: Covers current inspection and monitoring techniques to evaluate existing structures Includes coverage of robotic (ROV) inspection and repair methods Provides an overview of repair and maintenance techniques applicable to the splash‐zone and underwater operations Written for engineers, designers, and safety auditors working with offshore structures. Underwater Inspection and Repair for Offshore Structures is a comprehensive resource for understanding how to effectively inspect and repair these vulnerable structures.

INTRODUCTION AND LITERATURE REVIEW The exploration for oil and gas in ever increasing water depths has given an impetus to research efforts on the behaviour of offshore structures under ocean environment. These structures are continuously subjected to environmental loading because of waves, wind and current. A response analysis is required to assess the safety of offshore structure under severe storm conditions as well as for estimation of damage caused by less severe but more frequently occuring sea states. A majority of the reported failures in the life time of offshore structures are in fact fatigue failures. The offshore structures are usually built in the form of welded tubular structures. The joints of these tubular members experience the fatigue damage mainly due to small defects in welding which act as crack initiators, high stress concentrations and the variable loads. The variable loads due to the ocean waves cause cyclic stress variation in the structural members and the accumu lated effect of these stresses results in the fatigue failure.
