Book Synopsis Resident Duty Hours by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Resident Duty Hours written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-04-27 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical residents in hospitals are often required to be on duty for long hours. In 2003 the organization overseeing graduate medical education adopted common program requirements to restrict resident workweeks, including limits to an average of 80 hours over 4 weeks and the longest consecutive period of work to 30 hours in order to protect patients and residents from unsafe conditions resulting from excessive fatigue. Resident Duty Hours provides a timely examination of how those requirements were implemented and their impact on safety, education, and the training institutions. An in-depth review of the evidence on sleep and human performance indicated a need to increase opportunities for sleep during residency training to prevent acute and chronic sleep deprivation and minimize the risk of fatigue-related errors. In addition to recommending opportunities for on-duty sleep during long duty periods and breaks for sleep of appropriate lengths between work periods, the committee also recommends enhancements of supervision, appropriate workload, and changes in the work environment to improve conditions for safety and learning. All residents, medical educators, those involved with academic training institutions, specialty societies, professional groups, and consumer/patient safety organizations will find this book useful to advocate for an improved culture of safety.

Book Synopsis Precepting Medical Residents in the Office by : Paul M. Paulman
Download or read book Precepting Medical Residents in the Office written by Paul M. Paulman and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-07-06 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work includes a foreword by James Stageman. 'This book has been produced to serve as a resource for community physicians who bring medical residents into their practices and train them in their offices. This book has been designed with the busy community physician in mind. Each chapter is intended to serve as a practical, concise, easily read, stand alone resource on the topic covered.' - Paul M. Paulman, Audrey A. Paulman, Jeff D. Harrison, Jeff Susman and Kate Finkelstein, in the Preface. 'A comprehensive handbook for precepting residents. Although modern technology can change the way in which students acquire knowledge and skills, there is no substitute for a true mentor. In medicine, perhaps more than in any other profession, our mentors have always enjoyed a special place in our hearts and minds. Although some professional athletes may contend that "I am not a role model", there is no doubt where you and I, as preceptors, stand on this issue. We are role models. We are mentors and upon us falls the responsibility to prepare tomorrow's physicians for careers in public service that we can only begin to comprehend.' - James Stageman, in the Foreword. Written by practicing and academic physicians with decades of experience, this book is the only complete guide written specifically for busy community physicians who teach medical residents in their office. Each chapter is short, concise, easily read and serves as a stand alone reference on the topic covered. Its contents include: identifying learning needs and creating the learning environment; setting goals and objectives, providing feedback and evaluating residents; involving your office staff in teaching and integrating practice management into the preceptorship; preparing the community and practice for the residents and collaborating with local hospitals; documenting supervision and addressing ACGME competencies; and dealing with regulatory bodies and addressing liability issues. This book is an invaluable guide for practicing physicians teaching medical residents in the workplace, particularly those in family medicine, internal medicine and pediatrics, and a useful reference for residency program directors.
Book Synopsis Physician and Resident Staffing in an Academic Emergency Department by :
Download or read book Physician and Resident Staffing in an Academic Emergency Department written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rising demands and market competition have forced many emergency departments to improve their quality of service. This improvement is usually achieved at the cost of increasing resources in the emergency department in order to increase the patient satisfaction. This research deals in part with both problems, i.e., increasing patient satisfaction and keeping costs in the ED to a minimum. The research has schedules designed on the patient contacts for physicians and residents in the academic emergency department at York hospital such that the resource costs and patient waiting costs are kept at a minimum. The emergency department is simulated using Arena 7.0 and the minimum cost objective is achieved by running OptQuest for Arena to get the near optimal number of staff working the designed schedules in order to achieve the objective. Efficiently scheduling doctors and residents resulted in waiting cost reductions of almost 80%. There was also an increase in patient satisfaction, considering the time taken by patients to see a doctor or resident for the first time.

Book Synopsis Physician Staffing for the VA by : Committee to Develop Methods Useful to the Department of Veteran Affairs in Estimating Its Physician Requirements
Download or read book Physician Staffing for the VA written by Committee to Develop Methods Useful to the Department of Veteran Affairs in Estimating Its Physician Requirements and published by Physician Staffing for the Va. This book was released on 1991-02 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of Veterans Affairsâ€"the VAâ€"operates the nation's largest and most diverse health care system. How many physicians does it need to carry out its principal mission-related responsibilities of patient care, education, and research? This book presents and demonstrates by concrete example a methodology to answer this basic, but extraordinarily complex, question. The heart of the methodology is a decision-making process in which both statistical and expert judgment approaches can be used separately or in concert to calculate the number of physicians required, by specialty, for any facility in the VA system. Although the analyses here focus entirely on the VA, the methodology could be used to determine physician staffing for a wide range of public and private sector health care organizations.
