Download or read book Canadian Public Attitudes Toward Options for the Release of Census Records, a Summary Report of Research: written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes findings of a survey of public opinion research, including focus groups & two national surveys, on the topic of the release of historical Census records. Current legislation is often interpreted to prohibit the release of individual-level census records for the 1906 & subsequent censuses, but historians & others have urged the federal government to permit the release of early Census data since these records have significant value as a source of information for historical & genealogical research. The focus group explored the awareness of & response to data release options, arguments for & against data release, and the impact of legislative change on Census data collection. The first national survey focussed mainly on probing opinion about the arguments supporting the release of Census data. The second focussed mainly on assessing public support for retroactive legislation that would allow the release of historical Census data. A copy of the focus group discussion agenda and tabulations of survey findings are appended.

Download or read book Expert Panel on Access to Historical Census Records written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the report of a panel appointed to report on the legal, privacy, & archival implications of providing access to historical Census records. The panel examined the following issues: the elements of the difference of opinions between Canadians who would seek to maintain the protection of personal information and those who would like to examine personal or community histories; and the options that exist to provide access to historical Census records. The first section frames the major issues of concern and considers the positions of the major proponents for & against release. The report then turns to a consideration of the history of census in Canada, the international context, the undertakings regarding confidentiality & release, the nature of the questions asked of respondents, and current public concerns & views. After some discussion of the legal situation, the report considers the important practical issues of how the release of historical Census records can be put into practice.
