Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the discussion of the theory of optimal cooperative rendezvous, it is shown that the problem of obtaining the optimal control of two independently controlled systems having a common goal may be solved using the maximum principle of Pontryagin. This will be accomplished provided certain special boundary conditions are obtained for the Hamiltonian system of differential equations. It is further demonstrated that the requirement that two state variables be equal at the rendezvous time implies that the adjoint variables associated with them are negatives of each other at that time. Using this result, a first-order time-optimal rendezvous problem is solved and the results discussed. Indications for further work are also given.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive analysis of time-fixed terminal rendezvous around the Earth using chemical propulsion. The book has two main objectives. The first is to derive the mathematics of relative motion in near-circular orbit when subjected to perturbations emanating from the oblateness of the Earth, third-body gravity, and atmospheric drag. The mathematics are suitable for quick trajectory prediction and the creation of computer codes and efficient software to solve impulsive maneuvers and fly rendezvous missions. The second objective of this book is to show how the relative motion theory is applied to the exact precision-integrated, long-duration, time-fixed terminal rendezvous problem around the oblate Earth for the general elliptic orbit case. The contents are both theoretical and applied, with long-lasting value for aerospace engineers, trajectory designers, professors of orbital mechanics, and students at the graduate level and above.

Book excerpt: The definitive reference for space engineers on rendezvous and docking/berthing (RVD/B) related issues, this book answers key questions such as: How does the docking vehicle accurately approach the target spacecraft? What technology is needed aboard the spacecraft to perform automatic rendezvous and docking, and what systems are required by ground control to supervise this process? How can the proper functioning of all rendezvous-related equipment, systems and operations be verified before launch? The book provides an overview of the major issues governing approach and mating strategies, and system concepts for rendezvous and docking/berthing. These issues are described and explained such that aerospace engineers, students and even newcomers to the field can acquire a basic understanding of RVD/B. The author would like to extend his thanks to Dr Shufan Wu, GNC specialist and translator of the book's Chinese edition, for his help in the compilation of these important errata.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of a study of time optimal rendezvous in three dimensions with bounds on the rocket thrust and the available propellant are described. The equations of motion are linearized and Neustadt's method is used to solve the two-point boundary value problem in the seven-dimensional state space. Three convergence acceleration schemes are studied. Examples of terminal rendezvous paths are presented and discussed in terms of the magnitudes of the bounds on thrust and fuel. The dependence of terminal errors on initial measurement errors in position and velocity is also discussed. The range of initial values include position errors up to 25 miles and relative velocity errors of 200 ft/sec. The thrust accelerations of the rockets are on the order of 1 ft/sec-sq; the propellant bounds (ideal characteristic velocities) range between 600 ft/sec and 250 ft/sec. (Author).

Book excerpt: The field of computational intelligence has grown tremendously over that past five years, thanks to evolving soft computing and artificial intelligent methodologies, tools and techniques for envisaging the essence of intelligence embedded in real life observations. Consequently, scientists have been able to explain and understand real life processes and practices which previously often remain unexplored by virtue of their underlying imprecision, uncertainties and redundancies, and the unavailability of appropriate methods for describing the incompleteness and vagueness of information represented. With the advent of the field of computational intelligence, researchers are now able to explore and unearth the intelligence, otherwise insurmountable, embedded in the systems under consideration. Computational Intelligence is now not limited to only specific computational fields, it has made inroads in signal processing, smart manufacturing, predictive control, robot navigation, smart cities, and sensor design to name a few. Recent Trends in Computational Intelligence Enabled Research: Theoretical Foundations and Applications explores the use of this computational paradigm across a wide range of applied domains which handle meaningful information. Chapters investigate a broad spectrum of the applications of computational intelligence across different platforms and disciplines, expanding our knowledge base of various research initiatives in this direction. This volume aims to bring together researchers, engineers, developers and practitioners from academia and industry working in all major areas and interdisciplinary areas of computational intelligence, communication systems, computer networks, and soft computing. Provides insights into the theory, algorithms, implementation, and application of computational intelligence techniques Covers a wide range of applications of deep learning across various domains which are researching the applications of computational intelligence Investigates novel techniques and reviews the state-of-the-art in the areas of machine learning, computer vision, soft computing techniques
