Book Synopsis Bite-Sized Operations Management by : Mark S. Daskin
Download or read book Bite-Sized Operations Management written by Mark S. Daskin and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2021-09-29 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is an introduction to Operations Management. Three themes are woven throughout the book: optimization or trying to do the best we can, managing tradeoffs between conflicting objectives, and dealing with uncertainty. After a brief introduction, the text reviews the fundamentals of probability including commonly used discrete and continuous distributions and functions of a random variable. The next major section, beginning in Chapter 7, examines optimization. The key fundamentals of optimization—inputs, decision variables, objective(s), and constraints—are introduced. Optimization is applied to linear regression, basic inventory modeling, and the newsvendor problem, which incorporates uncertain demand. Linear programming is then introduced. We show that the newsvendor problem can be cast as a network flow linear programming problem. Linear programming is then applied to the problem of redistributing empty rental vehicles (e.g., bicycles) at the end of a day and the problem of assigning students to seminars. Several chapters deal with location models as examples of both simple optimization problems and integer programming problems. The next major section focuses on queueing theory including single-and multi-server queues. This section also introduces a numerical method for solving for key performance metrics for a common class of queueing problems as well as simulation modeling. Finally, the text ends with a discussion of decision theory that again integrates notions of optimization, tradeoffs, and uncertainty analysis. The text is designed for anyone with a modest mathematical background. As such, it should be readily accessible to engineering students, economics, statistics, and mathematics majors, as well as many business students.

Book Synopsis Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue, Long-Term Health, and Highway Safety by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue, Long-Term Health, and Highway Safety written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are approximately 4,000 fatalities in crashes involving trucks and buses in the United States each year. Though estimates are wide-ranging, possibly 10 to 20 percent of these crashes might have involved fatigued drivers. The stresses associated with their particular jobs (irregular schedules, etc.) and the lifestyle that many truck and bus drivers lead, puts them at substantial risk for insufficient sleep and for developing short- and long-term health problems. Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Fatigue, Long-Term Health and Highway Safety assesses the state of knowledge about the relationship of such factors as hours of driving, hours on duty, and periods of rest to the fatigue experienced by truck and bus drivers while driving and the implications for the safe operation of their vehicles. This report evaluates the relationship of these factors to drivers' health over the longer term, and identifies improvements in data and research methods that can lead to better understanding in both areas.

Book Synopsis Productivity Analysis by : Ali Dogramaci
Download or read book Productivity Analysis written by Ali Dogramaci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a wide variety of perspectives for productivity analysis. The back grounds of different researchers and practitioners who work on this topic include such fields as economics, business administration, and industrial engineering, among others. Within each such field, there are different schools of thought on the theory and application of productivity analysis. Often it is not difficult to observe a lack of communication among the advocates of these separate schools. The purpose of this book is to present in a single volume samples of alternative approaches to productivity analy sis. This may be considered as a first step toward a better communication among practitioners and researchers in the fields of management, industrial engineering, and economics. The focus of the book is on the United States, where the productivity growth problem has been acute for some time. The book begins with a brief overview chapter that covers some of the issues involved in productivity analysis and a sample of methodological ap proaches presently in use. After this introduction, we move to Chapter 2 where Solomon Fabricant presents the issues related to measurement and analysis at the macroeconomic level. In Chapter 3, C. Lowell Harriss discusses concepts that he considers es sential for productivity growth: capital formation, technological progress, and freedom.
