Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become an important concept in the last few decades. Although it originated in the developed countries of the West, the concept has been embraced and adapted by corporations and policy-making agencies in many developing countries. Not surprisingly, given the importance of growth and development as policy objectives in these countries, CSR has had a significant impact on sustainable development. Sustainable Development and Corporate Social Responsibility explores the evolution of CSR across the developed and developing world, with a particular focus on China and sustainable development. Through an extensive review of the literature and relevant case studies, the book examines whether CSR can make a contribution to sustainable development, how the patterns of CSR in developed Western economies compare to that in the rapidly growing economy of China, what trade-offs take place between CSR and economic growth as well as the future of CSR and its possible impact on the global sustainable development agenda. This book is a valuable resource for academics and upper-level undergraduate and postgraduate students in the fields of human/social geography, economics, business studies, sustainable development, development studies and environmental studies.

Book excerpt: China's recent economic transformation and integration into the world economy has coincided with increasing pressure for corporate law reform to make corporate social responsibility (CSR) integral to business and management strategy in China. This timely book critically analyses contemporary notions of CSR in China, discussing theory and practice alongside legal responses in this emerging field. Jingchen Zhao uniquely combines the history, traditions and social policies of China with Chinese law, explaining the significance of path dependence in China. He presents an in-depth debate on the difficulties involved in transplanting developed legal principles directly into Chinese society, and takes a detailed look at the CSR provisions in Chinese company law which aimed to put social and environmental concerns onto the corporate agenda. He suggests how these laws could be more effectively and efficiently enforced with reference to UK law, and explores specific issues including: * Chinese Company Law 2006 * the 'Harmonious Society' in China * the 2008 Financial Crisis and its impact on the Chinese economy * recent corporate scandals including the Sanlu Baby Milk scandal, the Wenchuan earthquake and CSR donations, the Beijing Olympic Games and CSR, and the Fujia chemical plant. This book will prove an enlightening read for academics and practitioners in the fields of law, business and management interested in CSR and the law in contemporary China.

Book excerpt: In recent years, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reporting in China has been experiencing a rapid development and the number of social reports issued by Chinese enterprises shows a sharp increasing trend. This book investigates the evolution of such reporting practice in the country and the reasons behind it. In addition, it also examines the reporting quantity and quality of Chinese enterprises by applying the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) as an evaluation tool. In response to policy documents so as to obtain the government’s recognition and to strive for more resources, state-owned enterprises, private enterprises and foreign-invested companies have made substantial efforts in social reporting in terms of quantity and coverage. However, it appears that there is still room for enhancing the quality of disclosure. The book also highlights the central government’s economic, political and social roles in promoting, encouraging and controlling the development of CSR reporting.

Book excerpt: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an important issue in contemporary business, management and politics, especially since the launch of the United Nations Global Compact in 2000 as an initiative to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies, and to report on them. This book examines the theory and practice of CSR in Asia. The philosophical and ideological underpinnings of CSR are rooted in Anglo-American and European principles of liberal democratic rights, justice and societal structures. This book not only considers the impact of Western CSR practices in Asia, but also provides much needed Asian perspectives on this issue. It investigates the operation of CSR in different countries across Asia, including China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Bangladesh – comparing the different meanings given to CSR, and the varying degrees of success experienced in different national contexts. This book argues if CSR is ever to revolutionize the manner in which we trade then it is needs to open itself up to the full variety of social responsibility as it occurs around the world. The book re-maps and refines debates about CSR as a global phenomenon, and will be of great value to professionals making strategic decisions in the global business environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objectives: To reveal what are the drivers of corporate social responsibility at the external, organizational, individual levels in China. Methods: A systematic search and collection of studies of social responsibility drivers in China were conducted. In total, this review gathered and analyzed 119 journal articles and 1 research report. Results: Through gathering and assorting literature, this review identifies that there are an increasing number of studies that explore and address social responsibility drivers in China since 2005. A trend to explore social responsibility drivers with multiple-level analysis exists as well. Much research adopts quantitative methodologies and focuses on external- and organizational-level drivers, instead of qualitative methodologies and individual-level antecedents. In addition, this review finds that in China, drivers at the external level are external contexts, stakeholder-related factors, and external culture. At the organizational level, drivers include firm motives, culture and values, shareholders and ownership, governance and structures, resources, and other factors, such as company performance and strategies. As for individual-level analysis, top executive-related factors, such as executives support, values, and characteristics, and employee-related factors, such as employee perceptions, need, and education level, are drivers for social responsibility. By comparing the drivers in China with those in the West, this review identifies some additional drivers in China that are unique from those in the western countries, such as state ownership, political relationships, and the influence of Taoism and Buddhism. Furthermore, there are drivers that are absent in extant studies in China, for example, third-party evaluations toward social responsibility, public image of companies, firm missions, and reporting and disclosure of social responsibility. Conclusions: Future studies of social responsibility drivers in China could focus on individual-level factors and utilize qualitative methodologies. Additionally, treating social responsibility as specific issues, such as environmental and labor protection, instead of a simple generalized term may be beneficial to scientifically study social responsibility.
