Book excerpt: We study post-harvest losses (PHL) in important and rapidly growing rural-urban value chains in Ethiopia. We analyze self-reported PHL from different value chain agents – farmers, wholesale traders, processors, and retailers – based on unique large-scale data sets for two major commercial commodities, the storable staple teff and the perishable liquid milk. PHL in the most prevalent value chain pathways for teff and milk amount to between 2.2 and 3.3 percent and 2.1 and 4.3 percent of total produced quantities, respectively. We complement these findings with primary data from urban food retailers for more than 4,000 commodities. Estimates of PHL from this research overall are found to be significantly lower than is commonly assumed. We further find that the emerging modern retail sector in Ethiopia is characterized by half the level of PHL than are observed in the traditional retail sector. This is likely due to more stringent quality requirements at procurement, sales of more packaged – and therefore better protected – commodities, and better refrigeration, storage, and sales facilities. The further expected expansion of modern retail in these settings should likely lead to a lowering of PHL in food value chains, at least at the retail level.

Book excerpt: This report collates and contextualizes available evidence on post-harvest losses (PHL) in horticultural crops in Kenya. We begin by outlining the extent of PHL in horticultural crops and its repercussions in the context of food security and poverty reduction. We then describe the growing importance of the horticulture sector in Kenya and its growth potential, especially in terms of exports. Following this discussion, we detail PHL for two important horticultural crops, mangoes and tomatoes, for which Kenya-specific evidence is available. We discuss ways to mitigate PHL from three angles: technological, economic or behavioral, and institutional. Documenting cost-effective technological interventions to mitigate PHL, we catalogue ways to tackle PHL at the individual farmer level. We then highlight behavioral bottlenecks to adoption of such technologies and the need to design interventions in ways that address these. Finally, we discuss structural and institutional changes that would need to accompany individual-level interventions to bring about significant reductions in PHL.

Book excerpt: Post-Harvest Losses (PHL) are considered to pose important economic losses for farmers in developing countries. This paper examines the effects of an intervention in Tanzania, aimed at reducing PHL of maize growing farmers during maize storage. Farmers were invited to attend a training on best practices in postharvest maize management, and a randomized subset of trainees received the opportunity to buy an improved storage facility (silos) at a substantially discounted price. Data collected at 30 days and 90 days after harvest, however, do not point to significant impacts of the treatments offered to the farmers. Receiving training on best practices improved stated knowledge, but training nor the opportunity to purchase an improved storage had a significant effect on maize storage and sales behavior, physical PHL during storage, or the quality of the stored maize. The paper explores potential explanations, and provides some policy recommendations for future learning and decision-making on how to address PHL issues in developing countries.

Multi-stage sampling techniques were used in selecting respondents for this study. Primary data was collected using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, Likert method and ordinary least square regression model; were analytical techniques employed. The result revealed that 62% of the respondents were males, 72% are married. The mean age was 42 years. Most (38%) attained primary education, 48% had a household size with population of 1-5 people. The mean year of experience was 17 years. Most (78%) used woven baskets in packaging their produce. The prevalent improved post-harvest techniques were; appropriate harvesting techniques (2.79), improved drying techniques (2.69) and improved processing technology (2.62) as indicated by their significant mean scores. The estimated value of tomato post-harvest loss per 50kg was 27.5%. Thus, estimated gross margin were ₦5,400 (without loss) and ₦3,910 (with loss) respectively. The coefficients of farming experience (-0.421), distance to markets (0.413), age of fruit at harvest (0.519), quantity of fruits harvested (0.387) and post-harvest practices (-0.396) were statistically significant at 5% level. The estimated coefficient of multiple determination (R2) was 0.795, suggesting that 79% of post-harvest losses were attributable to the variables in the regression model. The constraints identified affected tomato post-harvest loss reduction. Adoption of improved post-harvest techniques, storage and processing facilities, provision of improved market linkages and access to agricultural credit, extension contact and formation of producer cooperatives are strongly recommended for reduced wastages.
