Book excerpt: Research during the past year covers a wide range of topics, and includes work on analyzing particle collisions, meson spectra from quark interactions, and gauge fields; work was done closely with several high energy experimental groups. An extensive partial wave analysis of pion-nucleon scattering up to 10 GeV/c was completed revealing many new high spin baryon resonances which correspond to high quark excitations. A one-gluon-exchange potential with linear confinement was examined to study mass spectra, with particular attention being paid to the latest interesting structures around 3.772 GeV at SLAC and 9.5 GeV at FNAL. In gauge fields, success was found in deriving several rigorous results dealing with Wilson's gauge theory on a lattice. Throughout the year, there was a continuation of work in close collaboration with experimentalists, not only at Indiana, but also at Iowa State and Argonne. Lastly in May, help was given to organize a two-day conference on the present status of weak interactions. A list of publications is presented.

Book excerpt: Research can be divided into two categories, the first dealing with the phenomenological treatment of two-body collisions, and the second dealing with symmetry-breaking and charm within the framework of the quark model. A partial-wave amplitude analysis of .pi. proton elastic scattering at incident pion momenta between 1.6 GeV/c and 10 GeV/c has been made. The partial wave amplitudes agree with those at lower momenta and are close to the Regge amplitudes at higher momenta. A number of new .delta. resonances are suggested. Also high energy proton-proton scattering was analyzed using Reggeon field theory and a bare pomeron intercept above unity. Furthermore, high energy pion-nucleon charge-exchange data were described by including absorptive corrections to a rho Reggeon exchange. In the second category, meson mass spectra, including predicted masses of charmed mesons, in the quark model using attractive 1/r plus linear confining potentials. The quark model was used to obtain relations among electromagnetic mass splittings of mesons, including charmed mesons, to calculate the pion form factor, and to obtain magnetic moments of baryons. Also restrictions on a quark potential with confinement were discussed in order to obtain linear Regge trajectories. A list of publications is included.

Book excerpt: During the period of this contract, the participants carried out theoretical and experimental researches in high energy particle physics. The experiment group has been working with both bubble chamber and electronic detectors. The bubble chamber work made use of bubble chambers and particle beams at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Fermilab, and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The different electronic detectors were the TPC/Two Gamma facility situated at the PEP electron-positron collider at SLAC, the AMY detector at TRISTAN, the electron-positron collider at KEK in Japan, fixed target detectors at Fermilab, and a hybrid bubble chamber/electronic detector at SLAC. Negotiations were also started with the H1 collaboration for a UCD participation at the upcoming Hera electron-proton collider. The theoretical groups have been engaged in a wide variety of studies. Phenomenological studies of high energy interactions have constituted a major fraction of the effort, particularly those associated with the higgs field, various aspects of supersymmetry, and searches for new physics. Work on reactions associated with ee, ep, and hadron colliders has been extensive and includes many analyses providing tests of QCD. Lattice gauge theory has been a major area of work, and electroweak physics and mathematical physics have also been topics of study. Work has been published on heavy flavor decays and CP noninvariance, super symmetry, Yang-Mills theory and electroweak symmetry breaking as well as string theory.
