Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three major changes have been made in Research Experiences in Plant Physiology in producing this second edition. The format has been changed so as to minimize the number of pages and hence the cost to students, hopefully without sacrifice of readability or general utility of the manual. Three new exercises have been added on Phytochrome Effects in Nyctinastic Leaf Movements (Exercise 26), Measurement of Leaf Water Potentials with a Pressure Chamber (Exercise 27), and The Hill Reaction of Photosynthesis (Exercise 28) in an effort to provide more balanced coverage of the major topics in Plant Physiology. Lastly, modest revisions have been made in the text and lists of references throughout the manual and in the index. It is hoped that these collective changes will lead to continued wide acceptance of Research Experiences in Plant Physiology as the laboratory manual for upper-division undergraduate and graduate courses in Plant Physiology. The preparation of this new edition naturally has involved the invaluable assistance of several persons. lowe special thanks to Mrs. Ellen Witt for her patience and proficiency in retyping the entire manual. To Mrs. Witt, Mrs. Leona Nicholson, and my wife, Arvida, I am grateful for assistance in proofreading. I thank Brian D. Cleary for assisting with the writing of Exercise 27 on leaf water potentials, and Donald J. Armstrong for his valuable criticism and suggestions regarding many of the exercises. Finally, I thank Mr. Stephen J. Danko for assisting with the testing of the new exercises. Thomas C.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is geared toward students at the undergraduate and graduate levels and focuses on the basics of plant physiology. This book discusses the distinct mechanisms of water and ion transport, as well as the various metabolic events that are essential for plant development and result from plants' ability to capture photons from sunlight, convert inorganic forms of nutrition into organic forms, and synthesize high energy molecules such as ATP. In addition, this book describes the various metabolic events that result from plants' ability to convert inorganic forms of nutrition into organic forms. The detection and transduction of light signals work in perfect coordination with a broad range of plant growth regulators to regulate numerous plant developmental processes, and this book investigates many facets of this relationship. In addition, this research studies the many structural and biochemical adaptation mechanisms that plants have developed to allow them to endure a broad range of abiotic stress con ditions (such as salt, temperature, floods, and drought), as well as biotic interactions (such as attacks by pathogens and herbivores). The huge number of secondary metabolites that plants generate and that are vital to human health as well as their uses in biotechnology and agriculture are discussed. Plant physiology is the study of how plants work to maintain their health and growth. Photosynthesis, respiration, and the breakdown of organic molecules are all examples of plant metabolism that provide plants with the energy they need to survive and thrive.

Book excerpt: The existence and competition of trees and shrubs to sustain and put forth growth under varied environmental conditions is dependent on the interactions that occur between the plant metabolic processes and the prevailing environmental conditions. In order to understand the productivity of trees and shrubs, it is a prerequisite to know the experimental techniques of these vital processes. This volume provides a comprehensive presentation of this topic. The first part of this book deals with various aspects of experimental ecophysiology and recent research results of studies on plant pigments, epicuticular wax, leaf nutrients, carbon fixation, all supported by literature. The second part of the volume describes various laboratory techniques such as diffusion, imbibition, calorimetry, atomic absorption, mineral nutrition, nutrition analysis of forage, litterfall chemistry, nutrient cycle, etc. The third and fourth parts deal with advances in the techniques in the development of ecophysiology. The book will serve as an important handbook and resource for students, faculty and teachers, technicians, and researchers and scientists involved in forest science dealing with ecophysiology and biochemistry of woody and crop plants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants face a wide range of environmental challenges, which are expected to become more intense as a result of global climate change. Plant–soil interactions play an important role in the functioning of ecosystems. Soil properties represent a strong selection pressure for plant diversity and influence the structure of plant communities and biodiversity. The complexity of plant–soil interactions has recently been studied by developing a trait-based approach in which responses and effects of plants on soil environment are quantified and modelled. This fundamental research on plant–soil interaction in ecosystems is essential to transpose knowledge of functional ecology to environmental management.Frontiers in Plant-Soil Interaction: Molecular Insights into Plant Adaptation will address topics that provide advances in understanding plant responses to soil conditions through the integration of genetic, molecular, and plant-level studies of diverse biotic and abiotic stresses under field and laboratory conditions. This book will be beneficial to students and researchers working on stress physiology and stress proteins, genomics, proteomics, genetic engineering and other fields of plant-soil interactions. Frontiers in Plant-Soil Interaction will also help scientists explore new horizons in their area of research. Brings together global leaders working in the area of plant–environment interactions and shares their research findings Presents current and future scenarios for the management of stressors Illustrates the central role for plant-soil interactions in applying basic research to address current and future challenges to humans

Book excerpt: Nuclear Architecture and Dynamics provides a definitive resource for (bio)physicists and molecular and cellular biologists whose research involves an understanding of the organization of the genome and the mechanisms of its proper reading, maintenance, and replication by the cell. This book brings together the biochemical and physical characteristics of genome organization, providing a relevant framework in which to interpret the control of gene expression and cell differentiation. It includes work from a group of international experts, including biologists, physicists, mathematicians, and bioinformaticians who have come together for a comprehensive presentation of the current developments in the nuclear dynamics and architecture field. The book provides the uninitiated with an entry point to a highly dynamic, but complex issue, and the expert with an opportunity to have a fresh look at the viewpoints advocated by researchers from different disciplines. Highlights the link between the (bio)chemistry and the (bio)physics of chromatin Deciphers the complex interplay between numerous biochemical factors at task in the nucleus and the physical state of chromatin Provides a collective view of the field by a large, diverse group of authors with both physics and biology backgrounds

Book excerpt: The field of plant physiology includes the study of all chemical and physical processes of plants, from the molecular-level interactions of photosynthesis and the diffusion of water, minerals, and nutrients within the plant, to the larger-scale processes of plant growth, dormancy and reproduction. This new book covers a broad array of topics within the field. Plant Physiology focuses on the study of the internal activities of plants, including research into the molecular interactions of photosynthesis and the internal diffusion of water, minerals, and nutrients. Also included are investigations into the processes of plant development, seasonality, dormancy, and reproductive control. The chapters focus on various aspects of plant physiology, including phytochemistry; interactions within a plant between cells, issues, and organs; ways in which plants regulate their internal functions; and how plants respond to conditions and variations within the environment. Given the environmental crises brought about by pollution and climate change, this is a particularly vital area of study, since stress from water loss, changes in air chemistry, or crowding by other plants can lead to changes in the way a plant function. Readers of this book will gain the information they need to stay current with the latest research being done in this essential field of study.
