These sources, built and operated for the Office of Fusion Energy of the Department of Energy, will be operated by LLL as a national facility for the study of materials damage processes induced by 14-MeV neutrons. Design strength of the sources is 4 x 1013 n/s with a maximum flux of 1 X 1013 n/cm2s. The 400 keV, 150 mA D accelerators and 5000 rpm titanium--tritide target assemblies were built using experience gained with LLL's RTNS-I neutron source. The RTNS-I source, producing 6 x 1012 n/s, is currently the most intense 14-MeV source available. RTNS-I has been used for fusion reactor materials studies for the past six years. The experimental program for the new sources will be oriented toward fundamental measurements of high energy neutron-induced effects. The data produced will be used to develop models of damage processes to help guide materials selection for future fusion reactors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rotating Target Neutron Source II facility (RTNS-II) operated for over nine years. Its purpose was to provide high intensities of 14 MeV neutrons for materials studies in the fusion energy program. For the period from 1982-1987, the facility was supported by both the US (Department of Energy) and Japan (Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science). RTNS-II contains two accelerator-based neutron sources which use the T(d, n)4He reaction. In this paper, we will summarize the operational history of RTNS-II. Typical operating parameters are given. In addition, a brief description of the experimental program is presented. The current status and future options for the facility are discussed. 7 refs., 5 tabs.

Book excerpt: The goal of the RTNS-II (Rotating Target Neutron Source) project at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory is to provide a dedicated facility for investigation of 14-MeV neutron damage processes in materials to be used in controlled thermonuclear fusion reactors. LLL will operate the RTNS-II facility for ERDA as a national materials damage center. This Technical Development Plan describes the need for 14-MeV neutron sources, the physics and engineering design basis for the beam-target sources to be built for the RTNS-II facility, and the research support equipment included in the facility. Fiscal and manpower schedules for construction and operation of the facility are included. Finally, the accelerator and target research program directed at raising the strength of these sources from the design goal of 4 x 1013 n/s to higher levels is described.

Joint support and utilization of the facility by Japan and the US has been in effect for nearly 1 1/2 years. Irradiations, using the fusion neutrons produced at RTNS-II, are done in support of the fusion energy programs of the US and Japan. In addition, add-on non-fusion related irradiations can and have been done at RTNS-II.

Book excerpt: The Rotating Target Neutron Source (RTNS-II) facility produces 14-MeV neutrons for materials damage studies. Initial operation for irradiations, which occurred in 1979, began with a neutron source strength of 1013 n/s utilizing one of the accelerator-based neutron sources. Details are given on improvements which have resulted in both increased neutron production and neutron source strength and improved control and monitoring. 8 references.

Book excerpt: The RTNS-II Facility at Livermore was authorized in the FY76 ERDA budget. This facility will house two 4 x 1013 n/s sources of 14-MeV neutrons for materials damage experimentation. RTNS-II will be the first of DCTR's dedicated neutron source facilities. Initial operation is currently scheduled for March 1978. Engineering design of buildings and neutron sources started in March 1976 with construction scheduled to begin in August 1976. Design of the 150 mA D/sup +/ accelerators is based upon LLL experience with the MATS-III ion source and with the ICT accelerator of the RTNS-I source. Hardware design for the 50 cm, 5000 rpm tritium-in-titanium targets was guided by computer modeling of the target system now in use on RTNS-I. The final design of neutron sources and building layout will be discussed.

Book excerpt: The Rotating Target Neutron Source-II (RTNS-II) facility at LLNL is a unique materials-test facility. It provides the most intense source of 14-MeV neutrons in the world. Dedicated operation in support of the fusion-materials-research community began in early 1979. Three years later, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture (Monbusho) and the US Department of Energy agreed to jointly support the RTNS-II operation and to share in the use of the facility.

Book excerpt: Experience with neutron sources consisting of air-insulated 400 kV deuteron accelerators and tritium targets which rotate at 5000 rpm is reported. These accelerators are part of the Rotating Target Neutron Source-II (RTNS-II) facility. A review of the accelerator design is given. Operation of the prototype accelerator using hydrogen beams is discussed in detail. The parameters are tabulated for the first accelerator operated as a neutron source in November, 1978. Additional terminal pumping has reduced the radiation level from bremsstrahlung by at least a factor of ten. Ion source performance with deuterium has not been as good as that obtained with hydrogen. Beam divergence at the acceleration column exit is also observed. Future efforts include the fabrication of large diameter targets and design changes to improve source operation.

Book excerpt: The design concepts, operational experience, and modifications of the two RTNS-II (Rotating Target Neutron Source-II) 14 MeV neutron sources are reviewed. The original design called for operation at a peak neutron source strength of 4 x 1013 n/cm2s. The facility was to operate at high plant factor and at an acceptable cost in both dose delivered to operating staff and releases to the environment. The possibilities of higher source strengths are discussed in light of the operating experience to date and of new technologies that may be applied to the problems of high flux generators of this type. Changes in ancillary equipment that would provide more efficient or safe operation are also indicated. (LEW).

Book excerpt: The Rotating Target Neutron Source (RTNS-II) uses a 360-keV deuteron beam and the 3He(d, n)4He reaction to generate 14-MeV neutrons. The neutrons are used for fusion materials damage studies. The tritium target consists of a band of titanium tritide on copper alloy substrates of 23- or 50-cm diameter. During operation, the substrates are internally cooled and rotated at approx. 4000 rpm to withstand beam intensities in excess of 100 mA. Neutron production data have been accumulated for fifty-eight 23-cm and five 50-cm targets. From these data, using a non-linear least-squares fitting procedure, target performance parameters have been obtained which permit a quantitative comparison of individual targets. Average parameters are obtained for the 23- and 50-cm targets.

This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pneumatic sample-transfer system is needed to be able to rapidly retrieve samples irradiated with 14-MeV neutrons at the Rotating Target Neutron Source (RTNS-I). The rabbit system, already in place for many years, has been refurbished with modern system components controlled by an LSI-11 minicomputer. Samples can now be counted three seconds after an irradiation. There are many uses for this expanded 14-MeV neutron activation capability. Several fission products difficult to isolate from mixed fission fragments can be produced instead through (n, p) or (n, .cap alpha.) reactions with stable isotopes. Mass-separated samples of Nd, Mo, and Se, for example, can be irradiated to produce Pr, Nb, and As radionuclides sufficient for decay scheme studies. The system may also be used for multielement fast-neutron activation analysis because the neutron flux is greater than 2 x 1011 n/cm2-sec. Single element analyses of Si and O are also possible. Finally, measurements of fast-neutron cross sections producing short-lived activation products can be performed with this system. A description of the rabbit system and instructions for its use are presented in this report.
