Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rescued Essays of Thomas Carlyle "Europe lay pining, obstructed, moribund; quack-ridden, hag-ridden, - is there a hag, or spectre of the Pit so baleful, hideous as your accredited quack, were he never so close-shaven, mild-spoken, plausible to himself and others? Quack-ridden: in that one word lies all misery whatsoever. Speciosity in all departments usurps the place of reality, thrusts reality away; instead of performance, there is appearance of performance. The quack is a Falsehood Incarnate; and speaks and makes and does mere falsehoods, which Nature with her veracity has to disown." - Carlyle, Chartism. Book excerpt: The most important writings by the great and controversial Victorian polemicist. Carlyle was one of the great figures of his age: thunderous, passionate, irascible, sceptical and idealistic. This selection is representative of all stages of Carlyle's career, and includes 'Sign of the Times', his essay against the mechanization of the age and the rise of the machines; the whole of 'Chartism'; and extracts from The French Revolution, Heroes and Hero-Worship, Sartor Resartus, Past and Present, as well as other pieces. The book also includes an introduction and notes by Alan Shelston. Thomas Carlyle was born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, in 1795. Intended by his family to become a Presbyterian minister, he was influenced by the Scottish Enlightenment while at the University of Edinburgh and became a teacher instead. He later turned to literary work, publishing a life of Schiller and translations of Goethe in the 1820s. His first truly successful book was The French Revolution, which was followed by many others. He died in 1881. Alan Shelston was Senior Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Manchester until retirement in 2002. He has edited a number of Gaskell's works including The Life of Charlotte Bronte (1975) and North and South (2005), and was joint editor with John Chapple of The Further Letters of Mrs Gaskell (2000). He has published a selection of Hardy's poetry and written on a number of nineteen century authors including Dickens and Henry James.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas Carlyle: An Essay, Reprinted From 'Blackwood's Magazine' This being the root-idea, we have said it al ways presents itself to him in a particular aspect, which he has expounded in his 'sartor Resartus.' It appears to him that the last suit of clothes with which the world was invested is worn out. In Church and State, and all Society, he sees only looped and windowed raggedness. All the insti tutions in which the moral necessities of man are embodied, are in decay and ruin - even as the world's former wardrobes of paganism, and monkery, and chivalry, exist only in museums. The world is out at elbows, and the time is out of joint; and Mr Car lyle, not without sad appreciation of the cursed spite which dwells in the circumstance, believes that he was born to set it right. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Thomas Carlyle, 1826-1836, Vol. 1 MY dear mother - Had it not been that I engaged to let you hear of me on Saturday, I should not have been tempted to put pen to paper this night for I am still dreadfully confused, still far from being at home in my new situation, inviting and hopeful as in all points it appears. But I know your motherly anxieties, I felt in my heart the suppressed tears that you did not shed before my departure, and I write at present to tell you that you are not to shed any more. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Thomas Carlyle, 1826-1836, Vol. 2 Our plans here are getting a little more fixed: I can now give you some faint fore shadow of them. I pride myself that I have never gone half a foot out of my road in search of what are called prospects: it is yet and has always been clear to me that I was one whom Promotion was least of all likely to visit. Thank Heaven I know my trade: it is to write tram while I can be kept alive by so doing, and to die writing it when I can no longer be kept alive. SO feeling, I look upon all mortals with the friendliest humour; let Kings and Chancellors fight their own battles, and all speed to them let the Devil go his way, and I will go mine. Therefore after settling my Author-business in London, I will not stay an hour, waiting at the pool, as some advise me. On the whole the world stands related. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Thomas Carlyle, 1826-1836 The letters contained in this volume have been selected from a great mass mainly addressed to the various members of Carlyle's family. In the years in which they were written he had few important correspondents in the outer world. The letters as here given afford a tolerably continuous account of his life from his marriage to the period when his fame was about to be established by the publication of his French Revolution. Many interesting letters of these years appear in Mr. Froude's Life of Carlyle; but they are printed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
