Book excerpt: In a world where the roles of Light and Darkness had shifted, there were two powerful individuals chosen by the Old Divines . . . They were given the titles of Ascension and Chaos as recognition of their ferocious might. A millennia after his wife and son were murdered, Aergos—the Demon King, Lord of Chaos, and ruler of the lost kingdom of Amedus—wakes up alone in the Void Realm, stripped of all memory. With the help of his son’s spirit, he learns of his kingdom’s destruction at the hands of Elysium, the cruel Holy Priestess and daughter of Cydius, the Lord of Ascension and ruler of the rival kingdom of Requiem. Desperate to restore balance in the world and stop Elysium’s ongoing reign of terror, Aergos traverses immaterial planes and finds his way back into the realm of the Gem of Purity, where he was first banished on that fateful day a thousand years ago. There, he discovers his access point to the world he once knew: a magical mirror. Enter Kisara, a maid to King Cydius, condemned to a life of servitude. After discovering the Gauntlet of Edin, a powerful relic embedded with the Gem of Purity wherein Aergos is trapped, she makes contact with the Demon King. Both seeking freedom from their respective prisons, Kisara and Aergos make a pact to uncover the truth of Amedus’s destruction and the whereabouts of the evil Holy Priestess. Kisara dons the gauntlet, creating a telepathic link with Aergos, and escapes Requiem. Together, the unlikely duo encounter unholy beasts, pitiless villains, and supernatural allies, harnessing the power of Dark magic to uncover and destroy the plague of corrupted Light. This is Aergos’s last chance for redemption, and blood will stain the earth before peace even has a chance to be restored.
Book Synopsis Resonances of the Raj by : Nalini Ghuman
Download or read book Resonances of the Raj written by Nalini Ghuman and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the century of British rule of the Indian subcontinent known as the British Raj, the rulers felt the significant influence of their exotic subjects. Resonances of the Raj examines the ramifications of the intertwined and overlapping histories of Britain and India on English music in the last fifty years of the colonial encounter, and traces the effects of the Raj on the English musical imagination. Conventional narratives depict a one-way influence of Britain on India, with the 'discovery' of Indian classical music occurring only in the post-colonial era. Drawing on new archival sources and approaches in cultural studies, author Nalini Ghuman shows that on the contrary, England was both deeply aware of and heavily influenced by India musically during the Indian-British colonial encounter. Case studies of representative figures, including composers Edward Elgar and Gustav Holst, and Maud MacCarthy, an ethnomusicologist and performer of the era, integrate music directly into the cultural history of the British Raj. Ghuman thus reveals unexpected minglings of peoples, musics and ideas that raise questions about 'Englishness', the nature of Empire, and the fixedness of identity. Richly illustrated with analytical music examples and archival photographs and documents, many of which appear here in print for the first time, Resonances of the Raj brings fresh hearings to both familiar and little-known musics of the time, and reveals a rich and complex history of cross-cultural musical imaginings which leads to a reappraisal of the accepted historiographies of both British musical culture and of Indo-Western fusion.

Not many subjects go unexplored in his laidback way of delivery and his thought-provoking way we look at things. Book Synopsis The Land Before Her by : Annette Kolodny
Download or read book The Land Before Her written by Annette Kolodny and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To discover how women constructed their own mythology of the West, Kolodny examines the evidence of three generations of women's writing about the frontier. She finds that, although the American frontiersman imagined the wilderness as virgin land, an unspoiled Eve to be taken, the pioneer woman at his side dreamed more modestly of a garden to be cultivated. Both intellectual and cultural history, this volume continues Kolodny's study of frontier mythology begun in The Lay of the Land.

Book Synopsis A Requiem for Karl Marx by : Frank E. Manuel
Download or read book A Requiem for Karl Marx written by Frank E. Manuel and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1997-09 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Karl Marx the icon has fallen along with so many communist regimes, we are left with the mystery of Karl Marx the man, the complexities of a life that has profoundly affected millions. A Requiem for Karl Marx is Frank Manuel's searching meditation on that life, a learned and elegantly written engagement with the man and his work. Manuel gives us a psychological portrait rendered with sympathy and critical detachment, a probing look at the connections between the private drama of Marx's life and his revolutionary ideas. Manuel pursues these connections from Marx's adolescence and education in Trier through his university studies, marriage to a German baroness, and early affiliation with French and German radical groups. Here we see Marx in moments of youthful rapture, in periods of despair, in maneuvers of blatant hypocrisy, in outbursts of self-mockery. We follow his involuted response to his status as a converted Jew, observe the psychic toll of debilitating bouts of illness, and witness the shattering effects of his aggressive, often brutal conduct toward friend and foe alike. Manuel analyzes in intricate detail the central role of Marx's enduring relationship with Friedrich Engels, which appears to transcend the bounds of friendship, and his changing behavior toward his wife, Jenny, the neurotic and tragic figure who shared his dismal London exile. What becomes clear in this narrative is the link between Marx's personal life and his ideas about class struggle, revolutionary strategy, and utopia--as well as the impact of his personal vision and political tactics on the movements that followed him, down to our day.
