Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in fictitious Yoknapatawpha County, the backdrop for many of William Faulkner’s other novels, Sanctuary and Requiem for a Nun recount the tumultuous and tragic life of Temple Drake. In the 1931 novel Sanctuary, Temple is a student at Ole Miss university when her idyllic life is altered after she is sexually assaulted by the criminal Popeye. Faulkner revisits Temple, now a married mother in Requiem for a Nun, as she awaits the execution of her child’s murderer. Beginning with the judgment of the death sentence, Faulkner’s taut narrative focuses on how one’s past can impact the future of an entire family. William Faulkner was a relatively unknown author until he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949. Since then, he has become recognized for his candid and sometimes controversial writing on life in the American South. Published in 1931, Sanctuary established William Faulkner’s literary reputation, and, because of its subject matter, continues to be considered one of his more controversial novels. HarperPerennial Classics brings great works of literature to life in digital format, upholding the highest standards in ebook production and celebrating reading in all its forms. Book excerpt: The baker is Mickey Lerner–a man of confused passions who lives in a Baltimore community polarized by racial mistrust. One day, Mickey’s life is changed by a shocking crime, forcing him to explore the mysteries of his marriage and the awkwardness of life with his eighteen-year-old son. Mickey also faces the growing tension between blacks and whites that threatens both his family and his bakery. Above all, Mickey must confront himself: his feelings, his desires, and the memory of a tragic event from his past. Paul Hond has written a profoundly moving novel that never flinches in describing the dynamics of race and class, while offering a poignant vision of redemption. Powerful and compassionate, The Baker is a timeless work of fiction by a young writer whose voice will linger in the memory of readers for years to come.

Book excerpt: Since it first emerged from Britain’s punk-rock scene in the late 1970s, goth subculture has haunted postmodern culture and society, reinventing itself inside and against the mainstream. Goth: Undead Subculture is the first collection of scholarly essays devoted to this enduring yet little examined cultural phenomenon. Twenty-three essays from various disciplines explore the music, cinema, television, fashion, literature, aesthetics, and fandoms associated with the subculture. They examine goth’s many dimensions—including its melancholy, androgyny, spirituality, and perversity—and take readers inside locations in Los Angeles, Austin, Leeds, London, Buffalo, New York City, and Sydney. A number of the contributors are or have been participants in the subculture, and several draw on their own experiences. The volume’s editors provide a rich history of goth, describing its play of resistance and consumerism; its impact on class, race, and gender; and its distinctive features as an “undead” subculture in light of post-subculture studies and other critical approaches. The essays include an interview with the distinguished fashion historian Valerie Steele; analyses of novels by Anne Rice, Poppy Z. Brite, and Nick Cave; discussions of goths on the Internet; and readings of iconic goth texts from Bram Stoker’s Dracula to James O’Barr’s graphic novel The Crow. Other essays focus on gothic music, including seminal precursors such as Joy Division and David Bowie, and goth-influenced performers such as the Cure, Nine Inch Nails, and Marilyn Manson. Gothic sexuality is explored in multiple ways, the subjects ranging from the San Francisco queercore scene of the 1980s to the increasing influence of fetishism and fetish play. Together these essays demonstrate that while its participants are often middle-class suburbanites, goth blurs normalizing boundaries even as it appears as an everlasting shadow of late capitalism. Book excerpt: A dying blues singer is murdered and private detective Jake Falcon, introduced in author Warren Trest's Missing in Paradise, goes all out to track down the killer and find the victim’s daughter, who seems not to exist. The search leads to the dregs of a black-market adoption ring that once flourished within the shadows of the segregated South. An underworld syndicate of hardened criminals (drug smugglers, human traffickers, murderers, and militant white supremacists), led by vicious, one-eyed Willie Abraham, stands in Falcon’s way and leaves a trail of dead bodies to deter him. Crime-busting former Governor John Patterson brings a powerful ally to Falcon’s side when he joins the battle to bring down Abraham’s army of thugs and rescue Falcon to fight another day.

Book excerpt: Hunting the Sun upends all previous Faulkner biography, scholarship, and criticism by tracing to Honoré de Balzac virtually everything in William Faulkner's oeuvre. Faulkner's work departs, often confusingly, from the traditional Romantic focus of novels. The reason for the confusion is that Faulkner was rewriting Balzac's La Comedie humaine, itself a prose revision of Dante's Divine Comedy, in order to create his own comedy. More specifically, Faulkner abandons the metaphysical basis of the earlier works and replaces them with a psychosexual one; for example, Balzac's «The Succubus» becomes Faulkner's «Carcassonne», which the American renders an erotic fantasy. Virtually all of Faulkner's major works, and many of the lesser ones, have direct sources in Balzac's work.
