Book excerpt: Excerpt from Impact of Atomic Energy Down through history the Christian church has related itself to new conditions in varying ways and with varying degrees of effectiveness. Once people believed that the earth stood motionless in the center of the universe. The discovery of the earth's movement caused men to radically change their thinking. Once slavery was an accepted and honored social form. Today that institution is viewed as an abomination. Today nuclear power is a reality only fifteen years old. It is causing us to rethink our whole relationship to power. For this awesome power now in the hands of men puts mankind's future in the balance. It is a power which can be used for good or for evil. Because of this new factor in today's life, the Christian church needs both to have the factual information and to seek to address herself to this new condition in a Christian way. The Peace and Social Concerns Committee of the General Conference Mennonite Church's Board of Christian Service has sought to do this. Dr. Erwin N. Hiebert, associate professor of the History of Science at the University of Wisconsin, presented a lengthy paper to this committee on the nuclear question. His impressive work inspired the decision to publish this book. Further, this effort to face the question of nuclear power brought forth a statement of position regarding nuclear power which was adopted at the 1959 session of the General Conference held at Bluffton, Ohio. Mr. Hiebert reviews the facts of the development of the atomic bomb and the reactions to this power on the part of scientists, the political community, nations, and the church. From this, one can gain an insight into the moral implications involved. The author of this work comes eminently qualified for this task. Originally a Canadian, he did undergraduate study at Tabor College and Bethel College in Kansas. During the war he was a research chemist on the Manhattan Project. Book excerpt: This second edition represents an extensive revision of the ?rst edition, - though the motivation for the book and the intended audiences, as described inthepreviouspreface, remainthesame. Theoveralllengthhasbeenincreased substantially, with revised or expanded discussions of a number of topics, - cluding Yucca Mountain repository plans, new reactor designs, health e?ects of radiation, costs of electricity, and dangers from terrorism and weapons p- liferation. The overall status of nuclear power has changed rather little over the past eight years. Nuclear reactor construction remains at a very low ebb in much of the world, with the exception of Asia, while nuclear power’s share of the electricity supply continues to be about 75% in France and 20% in the United States. However, therearesignsofaheightenedinterestinconsideringpossible nuclear growth. In the late 1990s, the U. S. Department of Energy began new programs to stimulate research and planning for future reactors, and many candidate designs are now contending—at least on paper—to be the next generation leaders. Outside the United States, the commercial development ofthePebbleBedModularReactorisbeingpursuedinSouthAfrica,aFrench- German consortium has won an order from Finlandfor the long-plannedEPR (European Pressurized Water Reactor), and new reactors have been built or planned in Asia. In an unanticipated positive development for nuclear energy, the capacity factor of U. S. reactors has increased dramatically in recent years, and most operating reactors now appear headed for 20-year license renewals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally perceived as a cheap and plentiful source of power, the commercial use of nuclear energy has been controversial for decades. Worries about the dangers that nuclear plants and their radioactive waste posed to nearby communities grew over time, and plant construction in the United States virtually died after the early 1980s. The 1986 disaster at Chernobyl only reinforced nuclear power's negative image. Yet in the decade prior to the Japanese nuclear crisis of 2011, sentiment about nuclear power underwent a marked change. The alarming acceleration of global warming due to the burning of fossil fuels and concern about dependence on foreign fuel has led policymakers, climate scientists, and energy experts to look once again at nuclear power as a source of energy. In this accessible overview, Charles D. Ferguson provides an authoritative account of the key facts about nuclear energy. What is the origin of nuclear energy? What countries use commercial nuclear power, and how much electricity do they obtain from it? How can future nuclear power plants be made safer? What can countries do to protect their nuclear facilities from military attacks? How hazardous is radioactive waste? Is nuclear energy a renewable energy source? Featuring a discussion of the recent nuclear crisis in Japan and its ramifications, Ferguson addresses these questions and more in Nuclear Energy: What Everyone Needs to Know®, a book that is essential for anyone looking to learn more about this important issue. You'll find out what it's like to be a part of this wonderful new field. By learning a few of the basic principles of the science, and by performing the exciting experiments, you should be able to determine whether you'd like a career in atomic energy. Before you do the experiments, you should be aware that atomic energy isn't for the careless. You would not deliberately hold your finger in a flame, or drink a bottle of iodine. These things can be harmful if they are not handled carefully. It is the same with radio active substances. Radium paint from the dial of a clock should not be allowed to touch your bare skin. It is harmful if breathed, swallowed, or rubbed into an open sore. How ever, if you scrub your hands and tools after performing the experiments, and if you are careful not to Spread the paint dust into the air, it will not harm you. Any radium paint left over after your experiments can safely be gotten rid of by flushing it down the toilet. Thousands of people work safely with atomic energy every day. You can too. Perform your experiments care fully, and you'll find it very true that There's Adventure in Atomic Energy. As a discipline, this highly specialized body of law makes it possible for us to benefit from the life-saving applications of nuclear science and technology, including diagnosing cancer as well as avoiding and mitigating the effects of climate change. This book seeks to give readers a glimpse into the future of nuclear law, science and technology. It intends to provoke thought and discussion about how we can maximize the benefits and minimize the risks inherent in nuclear science and technology. This compilation of essays presents a global view in discipline as well as in geography. The book is aimed at representatives of governments -- including regulators, policymakers and lawmakers -- as well representatives of international organizations and the legal and insurance sectors. It will be of interest to all those keen to better understand the role of law in enabling the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear technology around the world. The contributions in this book are written by leading experts, including the IAEA's Director General, and discuss the four branches of nuclear law -- safety, security, safeguards and nuclear liability -- and the interaction of nuclear law with other fields of national and international law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Nuclear Energy: Its Potential for Peacetime Uses This volume is a direct outgrowth of many lectures that I have given on peacetime nuclear energy since the subject first became front-page news in 1945. In the dozen years that have now elapsed, the intense public interest has continued unabated, and rightly so. The wartime development was paid for completely by public funds, as has been most of the postwar program; hence the citizens in actuality own-most of the nuclear energy business in the United States - a two-billion-dollar-a-year business. In giving lectures to a wide variety of lay groups, I have always been impressed with the real eagerness of the listeners to learn something of nuclear energy, and their willingness to put in a few hours of concentrated effort in the process. The desire was not so much to be told astounding predictions of the future as to learn the solid facts of atomic structure, fission, the chain reaction, and the many applications of nuclear energy that are possible right now. Further, it was always gratifying that the listeners, with no technical training but with a keen desire to learn, could gain a real understanding of the basic principles in a short time. Book excerpt: A timely and thought-provoking solution to the world's energy shortfall The dramatic increases in oil and natural gas prices, the finite supply of fossil fuels, and concerns over emissions and global warming are forcing us to consider alternatives. In this measured and knowledgeable book, energy experts Alan Herbst and George Hopley argue that the time has come for the U.S. to revitalize its nuclear generation assets in order to successfully meet growing domestic electricity requirements and lessen our dependence on foreign sources of energy. Nuclear Energy Now provides an informed look at the benefits and drawbacks associated with this controversial alternative to traditional energy sources. It opens with a brief overview of commercial nuclear development in the U.S. during the past half-century and moves on to discuss what the future may hold if new initiatives-supported by the Energy Policy Act of 2005-gain traction. Along the way, readers will find informed insights into why the need for nuclear power has become so critical and how we can safely add capacity in the coming years. Exploring all of the issues related to developing America's nuclear energy capabilities safely and cost-effectively, Nuclear Energy Now is a must-read for anyone concerned about our oil dependency, the environment, and future of the nation.
