Book excerpt: Some difficulties in synthesizing velocity perturbation fields from two-point space-time correlation measurements are discussed including the non-uniqueness of the representation and the effects of averaging. A phenomenological model of the fluctuating velocities based on damped travelling waves has been derived. This model is based on the physical mechanism of slow speed streak 'break-up', as taken from hydrogen bubble visualization data. The model compares quite well with the two-point space-time correlation of velocity perturbations. Furthermore, the form derived for the space-time velocity correlation function is exactly the same form as the best available empirical fit to the space-time wall pressure data. (Author).

Book excerpt: A physical model is presented which describes convective velocities within a flat plate turbulent boundary layer. A production zone concept is used as a basis for the physical model. The production zone concept employs the idea that packets of turbulent fluid are generated near the viscous sublayer. These packets are found to be discernible from the mean motion and may move either outward from the production zone or inward depending on their circulation relative to the fluid surrounding the packet. The packets are predicted to travel with a convective velocity different from the local mean velocity throughout most of the boundary layer. The model also predicts that the convective velocities will be functions of wave number outside the production zone.

Book excerpt: Space-time correlations of the longitudinal velocity fluctuations have been measured in a turbulent boundary layer, with and without frequency filtering. Celerities, relative to various fluctuation scales, are defined as partial derivatives of the isocorrelation curves with respect to both space separation and time delay. An example of introducing these celerities into the equations of motion is given for a simple case. The variation of these celerities with respect to fluid velocity is examined as function of fluctuation scales and of distance to the wall. As a complement to the study of the effect of longitudinal space separation, the effect of a space separation orthogonal to the wall has been determined, for various filtering frequencies, with regard to optimum time delay and the maximum value of the correlation coefficient.
