Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly three decades after the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), people with disabilities continue to be significantly underrepresented in the American Labor force. This loss of talent to U.S. organizations and restriction of opportunities for millions of workers have broader implications for civil society. People denied access to the workforce are limited in their ability to contribute to the economy and to their communities, heightening their reliance on public support systems and reducing the number of people participating in community life. This LERA volume focuses on the employment of individuals with disabilities. Its purpose is to review the current employment situation for Americans with disabilities, place it in the context of the U.S. regulatory system, describe current issues, identify ways that employers are approaching possible remediation of these issues, and identify emerging concerns and opportunities. A multi-disciplinary team of researchers and practitioners provide a broad-based overview of related issues, approaches, and opportunities. This volume will be useful to a wide array of professionals, including labor and employment relations attorneys and specialists; human resource, diversity and inclusion, and equal employment opportunity professionals; as well as organizational leaders, managers, and supervisors who are seeking to improve employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities both here and abroad.

Highlighting the experiences of disabled individuals who have worked despite social stigma, discrimination, hiring bias, and legal barriers, the main premise of the text is that contrary to myths, people with disability have always been an important part of the U.S. workforce.

Book excerpt: With several empirical evidences, this book advocates on the importance of human capital of persons with disabilities and demands the paradigm shift from charity into investment approach. Society in general believes that people with disabilities cannot benefit from education, cannot participate in the labour market and cannot be contributing members to families and countries. To invalidate such assumptions, this book describes how education in particular helps make persons with disabilities achieve economic independence and social inclusion. For the first time, detailed analyses of returns to the investment in education and nexus between disability, education, employability and occupational options are discussed. Moreover, other chapters describe disability and poverty followed by the discussion of barriers behind why persons with disabilities are unable to obtain education despite the significantly higher returns. These foundational themes recur throughout the book.

Book excerpt: This book defined a contemporary disability human rights approach for the field of employment. Based on an analysis of the newly-adopted UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and present-day interpretations of international and European human rights instruments, the book identifies four main requirements as characterizing the contemporary disability human rights approach on the labor market: 1) substantive equality founded on inclusive general structures, 2) a definition of disability which recognizes that disability results from the interaction between impairment and social structures and that all persons may, at one time or another, be disabled, 3) involvement of organizations of disabled persons in law and policy-making, and 4) a rights-based approach. It examines Danish and Swedish employment law and policy, as well as their compliance. In addition, EU law and policy is examined. The analysis and comparison of Danish and Swedish law and policy concentrates on four different areas of employment law and policy: disability equality, employers' obligations towards employees with disabilities and/or reduced working capacity, employment promotion for unemployed persons with disabilities, and income-replacement for persons with disabilities outside the labor market. The comparison shows that the main difference between Danish and Swedish disability employment law lies in the level of employers' obligations under employment protection law, as well as health and safety law. It is argued that this difference leads to more inclusive general structures on the labor market in Sweden and constitutes the main explanation for the extreme difference in employment rates for persons with disabilities and reduced working capacity in Denmark and Sweden. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review, looking at disability employment support, and entitled "Getting in, staying in and getting on", seeks to ensure that disabled people have the opportunities and support needed to meet their employment aspirations. The focus of the review has set out a number of recommendations for employment support and the author has focused on three areas to promote this objective. (1) To set out the types of support that today's young disabled people will want in a future economy; (2) Enshrining the right to work objectives as set out in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; (3) To make a case for cross-Government work to unlock the big enablers of employment, that is "Getting in, staying in and getting on" , which includes raising the aspirations of what disabled people can achieve. For "getting in" this should include more disabled people doing apprenticeships, work experience and work placements; for "staying in" there should be better promotion for Access to Work for retension and for "getting on" there should be greater encouragement of disabled people in setting up businesses and gaining skills for career development. The publication is divided into 5 chapters, with appendices.
