Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the many forms which natural religion has assumed none probably has exerted so deep and far-reaching an influence on human life as the belief in immortality and the worship of the dead. This first volume of Frazer's book comprises the Gifford Lectures he gave at the University of St. Andrews in the years 1911 and 1912, and deals with the belief in immortality and the worship of the dead, as these are found among the aborigines of Australia, the Torres Straits Islands, New Guinea, and Melanesia. In the second volume, the author describes the corresponding belief and worship among the Polynesians, a people related to their neighbors the Melanesians by language, if not by blood._x000D_ Contents:_x000D_ Introduction_x000D_ The Savage Conception of Death_x000D_ Myths of the Origin of Death_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Aborigines of Central Australia_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the other Aborigines of Australia_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Natives of the Torres Straits Islands_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Natives of British New Guinea_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Natives of German New Guinea_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Natives of German and Dutch New Guinea_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Natives of Southern Melanesia (New Caledonia)_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Natives of Central Melanesia_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Natives of Northern and Eastern Melanesia_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Natives of Eastern Melanesia (Fiji)_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Maoris_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Tongans_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Samoans_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Hervey Islanders_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Society Islanders_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Marquesans_x000D_ The Belief in Immortality among the Hawaiians

Book excerpt: This study covers a number of topics that are prominent in the grammars of Australian Aboriginal languages, especially ergativity and manifestations of the hierarchy that runs from the speech-act participants down to inanimates. This hierarchy shows up in case marking, number marking and agreement, advancement and cross-referencing. Chapter 1 provides an overall picture of Australian languages. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 deal with case systems, including voice alternations and other advancements. Chapter 5 deals with the distribution of case marking within the noun phrase. Chapter 6 deals with systems that allow the cross-referencing of bound pronouns. Chapter 7 deals with clauses which appear to have more than one verb. Chapter 8 deals with compound and complex sentences. Chapter 9 deals with word order, and emphasises a theme introduced in Chapter 5, namely the widespread use of discontinuous phrases. Chapter 10 draws together ergativity and various manifestations of the hierarchy, and attempts to interpret their distribution. The final section provides an interesting hypothesis about the evolution of core grammar in Australia.

Book excerpt: Innovations and Challenges in Applied Linguistics from the Global South provides an original appraisal of the latest innovations and challenges in applied linguistics from the perspective of the Global South. Global South perspectives are encapsulated in struggles for basic, economic, political and social transformation in an inequitable world, and are not confined to the geographical South. Taking a critical perspective on Southern theories, demonstrating why it is important to view the world from Southern perspectives and why such positions must be open to critical investigation, this book: charts the impacts of these theories on approaches to multilingualism, language learning, language in education, literacy and diversity, language rights and language policy; provides broad historical and geographical understandings of the movement towards a Southern perspective and draws on Indigenous and Southern ways of thinking that challenge mainstream viewpoints; seeks to develop alternative understandings of applied linguistics, expand the intellectual repertoires of the discipline, and challenge the complicities between applied linguistics, colonialism, and capitalism. Written by two renowned scholars in the field, Innovations and Challenges in Applied Linguistics from the Global South is key reading for advanced students and researchers of applied linguistics, multilingualism, language and education, language policy and planning, and language and identity.
