Book excerpt: Beginning in the 1920s anthropologists, traders, and other admirers of traditional Native American cultures--appalled by the degradation of fine crafts into tourist trinkets--began cultivating a fine-arts market for indigenous textiles, jewelry, ceramics, and basketry. In More Than Curiosities, Susan Labry Meyn explores how this grassroots revival led to the founding of the Indian Arts and Crafts Board in 1935. Meyn demonstrates how the Board and its activities--such as development and marketing of quality arts and crafts, targeted loan programs, and the creation of artisans' cooperatives--not only aided in the development of a source of sustained income for Native artists, but also were pivotal in overcoming the larger Euro-American indifference toward Native culture. Under the leadership of René d'Harnoncourt, the Board facilitated cross-cultural understanding and provided the mechanisms that allowed Native American artists to revive traditional practices and adapt them to an Anglo market. Meyn's novel study will become an invaluable contribution to scholars of the period, artists, and anyone interested in Native American studies.

Book Synopsis Politics and Progress by : Andrew E. Kersten
Download or read book Politics and Progress written by Andrew E. Kersten and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2001-09-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on the state's impact on American society from the Civil War to the present. For the past several decades historians have tended to divide themselves into increasingly distinct historical perspectives. This anthology seeks to reverse that trend by linking the viewpoints of political and social historians to interpret the growth of the state and society in the United States since 1865, an era during which the state's role has been expanded and redefined in a diverse and rapidly modernizing America. This technique challenges historians to think more broadly about the interactions between the state and society. Arguing that the close examination of political frameworks offers significant insights into facets of social history, these chapters seek to connect social and political history through a common thread of human experience. Pieces are grouped thematically and chronologically to illustrate how the state's role in society has developed over time. The first six examine the state's influence on, and manipulation by, social groups, particularly women, Native Americans, labor, and the military. The final three demonstrate the impact of political and social thought on the relationship between the state and society.

Book Synopsis Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States by : National Research Council
Download or read book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.

Book Synopsis The Arbitrary Indian by : Gail K. Sheffield
Download or read book The Arbitrary Indian written by Gail K. Sheffield and published by . This book was released on 1997-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian Arts and Crafts Act was enacted by Congress to prevent the fraudulent sale of arts and crafts as Indian-made when they are not. Seemingly benign in intent, the act creates false distinctions, argues Sheffield, about who or what is "Indian" or "Indian-made." "Indians" are defined by the act according only to their political status - as members of federally or state-recognized tribes, or as individuals certified by either. Excluded are artists-craftspeople who are Indian according to ancestry or sociocultural traits but not according to the statutory definition. The result, Sheffield claims, is an "arbitrary process that creates arbitrary effects.".
