Book Synopsis Caribou Herds of Northwest Alaska, 1850-2000 by : Ernest S. Burch Jr.
Download or read book Caribou Herds of Northwest Alaska, 1850-2000 written by Ernest S. Burch Jr. and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2012-09-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his final, major publication Ernest S. “Tiger” Burch Jr. reconstructs the distribution of caribou herds in northwest Alaska using data and information from research conducted over the past several decades as well as sources that predate western science by more than one hundred years. Additionally, he explores human and natural factors that contributed to the demise and recovery of caribou and reindeer populations during this time. Burch provides an exhaustive list of published and unpublished literature and interviews that will intrigue laymen and experts alike. The unflinching assessment of the roles that humans and wolves played in the dynamics of caribou and reindeer herds will undoubtedly strike a nerve. Supplemental essays before and after the unfinished work add context about the author, the project of the book, and the importance of both.
Book Synopsis Woodcock Status Report, 1965 by : William H. Goudy
Download or read book Woodcock Status Report, 1965 written by William H. Goudy and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 1194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singing-ground surveys of the American woodcock indicate that breeding populations have increased gradually over the past 7 years while production, as indicated by wing-collection surveys, has remained relatively stable. The woodcock harvest, meanwhile, has probably more than doubled during the past decade. This suggests that while woodcock are probably becoming more important to North American sportsmen, hunting mortality is still relatively unimportant.

Book Synopsis The Ancient Murrelet by : Anthony J. Gaston
Download or read book The Ancient Murrelet written by Anthony J. Gaston and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breeding along the northern Pacific coast from British Columbia to Japan, this little known bird dwelt in relative obscurity until it became the focus of a conservation debate which has resulted in a new National Park in the Queen Charlotte Islands, where half the world's population breeds. It made the headlines again when a lost, lone bird suddenly appeared at Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel, England, in May 1990 and again in April 1991. The Ancient Murrelet and its three congeners are unique amongst seabirds in that their young are entirely precocial, leaving the nest as soon as they hatch to grow up at sea. Tony Gaston has carried out the only detailed study of the bird, in the fine mature coastal forests of the Queen Charlotte Islands. His work has revealed their complex social behaviour, the song behaviour of the males and the species' response to the variety of predators which they face - from Peregrines to Deer Mice. His story is set against a survey of the species worldwide and the grandeur of the northwest Pacific coast. The illustrations of Ian Jones, who also assisted with the research, capture the bird and its environment beautifully.

Book Synopsis Decline of the Steller Sea Lion in Alaskan Waters by : National Research Council
Download or read book Decline of the Steller Sea Lion in Alaskan Waters written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-04-04 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For an unknown reason, the Steller sea lion population in Alaska has declined by 80% over the past three decades. In 2001, the National Research Council began a study to assess the many hypotheses proposed to explain the sea lion decline including insufficient food due to fishing or the late 1970s climate/regime shift, a disease epidemic, pollution, illegal shooting, subsistence harvest, and predation by killer whales or sharks. The report's analysis indicates that the population decline cannot be explained only by a decreased availability of food; hence other factors, such as predation and illegal shooting, deserve further study. The report recommends a management strategy that could help determine the impact of fisheries on sea lion survival-establishing open and closed fishing areas around sea lion rookeries. This strategy would allow researchers to study sea lions in relatively controlled, contrasting environments. Experimental area closures will help fill some short-term data gaps, but long-term monitoring will be required to understand why sea lions are at a fraction of their former abundance.
