Zoological Log From the start of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition to its finish the open-air observations of the naturalists on board were recorded daily in this log. The log makes no pretensions to being anything more than a field note-book of the natural history of the voyage. It was, naturally, impossible to identify all birds seen on the wing, and all marine animals passed by when the ship was making passages from one point to another. In consequence, especially during the passage of the Scotia through the tropics, the records on many days are slight; and if the entries occasionally have little scientific value, they can at least claim to be a faithful record of life observed. During the Scotia's cruises in antarctic seas, and more particularly during her wintering in Scotia Bay, South Orkneys, the daily entries will be found to be fuller and more precise, and it is from those regions that the observations will have most value. Everyone on board was conversant with the names of the antarctic birds and seals; the attention of all the naturalists was concentrated on the work and since the Scotia was then in her special field of operations, there was seldom, if ever, any attempt made at quick passages. The log, therefore, expanded from a few cursory observations into a detailed naturalists' diary. The log has been prepared for publication with no material alterations; the names of the animals referred to have been added in footnotes wherever possible and desirable. Invertebrates L'un des fragments se presente comme une grande plaque spongieuse, tres molle, haute de 14 centimetres, large de 18 centimetres a un bout et de 12 centimetres a l'autre, epaisse de 4 a 7 millimetres; un bourrelet, qui limite son cote le plus etendu, contraste avec les autres bords, ethloches, et marque de toute evidence le bord superieur de l'eponge. Les deux faces de la plaque s'orientent aisement grace a la difference de leurs orifices. En pliant la plaque la face cloacale en dedans, le bourrelet marginal en haut, de maniere a placer ses bords lateraux en regard l'un de l'autre, on lui redonne presque cc qui semble avoir ete sa forme naturelle, celle d'un calice, qu'nn accident a fendu et ouvert de haut en bas. Un tel calice mesure, a cet etat, 14 centimetres de hauteur, 9 centimetres de largeur en haut et 6 centimetres environ vers le has. A supposer que sa section ait ete circulaire dans des conditions normales, son diametre exterieur, a l'entree, devait etre a peu pres de 6 centimetres; mais sa mollesse est telle que, dans l'alcool, ses moities repliees S'aplatissent l'une sur l'autre. Les parois de cc long calice ont leur maximum d'epaisseur vers sa base, puis vont doucement s'amincissant jusqu'au niveau du bourrelet marginal. Celui-ei est large de 10 a 12 mm. Dans les conditions on je l'observe, i1 apparait comme une bande imperforee, densement veloutee, nettement limitee, et tout entiere situee en bordure de la face cloacale; mais on peut supposer que les bords du calice se tenaient, durant la vie, quelque peu evases et ramenaient le bourrelet dans une position a pen pres horizontale. Notons de suite qu'il ne porte pas le moindre vestige d'une frange ciliee. La face externe du calice est percee de nombreux orifices, plus ou moins circulaires, pour la plupart petits (1 mm. A mm.) mais atteignant souvent 3 mm. Et plus de diametre. Ils ont dfl etre tous tendus d'un reseau d'hexactines en glaive, qui, par places, les recouvre encore. Ces hexaetines dermiques forment aussi nu revetement aux portions charnues comprises entre les orifices, et leur actine distale, bien developpee, donne a toute la surface du corps une legere hispidation, perceptible a l'oeil nu. A la face cloacale sont beants, comme chez Illalacosaccus vastus, de grands orifices composes, larges de 8 a 12 mm., dont les intervalles se parsement en outre de perforations beaucoup plus etroites. Par en bas, une dechirure profonde entame la paroi. C'est de la, selon toute probabilite, que le second fragment S'est detache, mais non sans une certaine perte de substance, car il est actuellement impossible de remettre en rapport d'une facon satisfaisante les parties disjointes. They contain the Meteorological, Magnetic, and Tidal results of the Expedition. It has been thought inadvisable to keep back this portion of Volume II. Till the rest was ready, in View of the extremely im portant nature of Mr mossman's monograph on the Meteorology of the Scotia, and because the Council of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, without questioning the merits of the paper, felt themselves, on financial and other technical grounds, unable to pass that monograph through the Society's Transactions, as they have done in the case of several of the biological contributions. In Meteorology the Scottish Expedition was particularly strong, for, as director of that department, no better man could have been secured than Mr robert C. Mossman. Mr mossman was in charge of the principal Meteorological Station in Edinburgh from 1886 to 1900, and acted frequently as interim-superintendent at Ben Nevis Observatory. He also spent the winter 1901 - 1902 near the head of Glen Nevis, studying the meteor ology Oi the Glen, especially in relation to Fohn winds, having the advantage both of the Summit and Low Level Ben Nevis Observatories to aid him in that research.* His memoir on the Meteorology of Edinburgh, in the Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, 1896 - 4902, will ever remain a monument of masterly workmanship. Mr mossman was supported by two other trained meteorologists, namely Mr D. W. Wilton and the leader of the Expedition, who had both had long experience at the Summit, Mid, and Low Level stations of the late Ben Nevis Observatories. The scientific staff, Captain robertson and the officers of the Scotia also rendered valuable assistance. The Scotia Meteorology has furthermore the very great advantage that the results have been worked up by the man who directed operations in the field.
