Book excerpt: A working group under the direction of the Library of Parliament was formed in 1989 to determine the feasibility of using alkaline paper for printing government publications. The working group commissioned the Canadian Government Publishing Services to perform a runability test by printing facsimile publications on alkaline paper and to investigate the effect of present printing methods on the pH factor of the paper. This report describes the test, the paperstocks tested, research conducted, bookbinding materials to be used, and methodology, chronology, and observations.

Book Synopsis Bibliography of Preservation Literature, 1983-1996 by : Robert E. Schnare (jr.)
Download or read book Bibliography of Preservation Literature, 1983-1996 written by Robert E. Schnare (jr.) and published by Rlpg/Galleys. This book was released on 2001 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preservation encompasses both the prevention of damage and conservation -- the physical treatment of damaged objects. Deteriorating books, environmental control, building maintenance, housekeeping and storage, electronic systems, security, and disaster planning and recovery are some of the concerns faced by preservation managers. Consequently, collaboration between collection management, conservators, and scientists is essential to successfully safeguarding materials. The Bibliography of Preservation Literature, 1983-1996, highlights the organizations and other resources that will assist in all aspects of collection preservation; from protective wrappers to magnetic media to acquisition and organization. Professional organizations such as the American Library Association, the Society of American Archivists, the Guild Book Workers, and the Association of Moving Image Archivists are cited. While not shying away from controversial issues, the comprehensive volume addresses the pragmatic concerns of modern collection preservation. Provides access to the best strategies and advice available today in an organized, easily accessible format.

Download or read book Recycling and Deinking of Recovered Paper written by Pratima Bajpai and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paper recycling in an increasingly environmentally conscious world is gaining importance. Increased recycling activities are being driven by robust overseas markets as well as domestic demand. Recycled fibers play a very important role today in the global paper industry as a substitute for virgin pulps. Paper recovery rates continue to increase year after year Recycling technologies have been improved in recent years by advances in pulping, flotation deinking and cleaning/screening, resulting in the quality of paper made from secondary fibres approaching that of virgin paper. The process is a lot more eco-friendly than the virgin-papermaking process, using less energy and natural resources, produce less solid waste and fewer atmospheric emissions, and helps to preserve natural resources and landfill space. Currently more than half of the paper is produced from recovered papers. Most of them are used to produce brown grades paper and board but for the last two decades, there is a substantial increase in the use of recovered papers to produce, through deinking, white grades such as newsprint, tissue, market pulp. By using recycled paper, companies can take a significant step toward reducing their overall environmental impacts. This study deals with the scientific and technical advances in recycling and deinking including new developments. - Covers in great depth all the aspects of recycling technologies - Covers the latest science and technology in recycling - Provides up-to-date, authoritative information and cites many mills experiences and pertinent research - Includes the use of biotech methods for deinking, refining. and improving drainage

Download or read book Lignocellulosic Composite Materials written by Susheel Kalia and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-06 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively summarizes important aspects of research in the active field of lignocellulosic (polymer) composites, including polymer materials from or containing cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. It describes how these materials can be produced from forest products and natural fibers from sources such as jute, flax, sisal, and many more, and even from agricultural residues (like wheat straw, corn stover, or sugarcane bagasse). In times of high demand for renewable green materials, lignocellulosic materials from organic matter produced by trees, shrubs and agricultural crops present a highly attractive feedstock. The international authors explain different treatment and fabrication methods for the production of lignocellulosic materials. Other chapters address the properties of these green materials or illustrate specific applications, ranging from food packaging and household products to adsorbents and even conductive polymer composites. In this way, this book offers a broad and comprehensive overview over the entire field of lignocellulosic composite materials.

Book Synopsis Xylanolytic Enzymes by : Pratima Bajpai
Download or read book Xylanolytic Enzymes written by Pratima Bajpai and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-02-03 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Xylanolytic Enzymes describes the enzyme structure and its interaction with plant cell walls, the properties and production of different enzymes and their application, and the knowledge gathered on the hydrolysis mechanism of hemicellulose. The knowledge gathered about the hydrolysis mechanism of the hemicelluloses, especially xylans, has greatly promoted the rapid application of these enzymes in new areas. Recently there has been much industrial interest in xylan and its hydrolytic enzymatic complex, as a supplement and for the manufacturing of food, drinks, textiles, pulps and paper, and ethanol; and in xylitol production as a fermentation substrate for the production of enzymes. This book describes xylan as a major component of plant hemicelluloses. - Presents a thorough overview of all aspects of xylanolytic enzymes - Gives up-to-date authoritative information and cites pertinent research - Includes studies on xylanase regulation and synergistic action between multiple forms of xylanase
