Book excerpt: This book aims to give a complete description of the impact of the Great Depression on the Madras Presidency, by using the techniques of both a historian and an economist. Manikumar's multidisciplinary approach provides a fresh perspective on the political, economic and social conditions of the Presidency in the 1930s. The major areas covered are: Madras's economy before the Depression, particularly the state of the export-dependant agricultural sector; the rise of indebtedness among the peasants; the varied effects on industrial sectors; the economic policies of the colonial government, which worsened the degree of debt; and the social and political effects of the Depression, including the Indian National Congress's increased political influence.

Book excerpt: Colonial and Post-Colonial Identity Politics in South Asia analyses the colonial and post–colonial documentation and caste classification among Muslims in India, demonstrating that religion negotiated with regional social customs and local social practices whilst at the same time fostering a shared religious belief. The central question addressed in this is book is how different castes assert their identity for classification and how caste encountered colonial documentation. Identifying the colonial context of the documentation of caste among Muslims, and relying on colonial documentation in various census reports, Gazetteers, government or police records, ethnographic studies and travelogues, the author demonstrates the sheer diversity of attempts and caste among Muslims. The book deconstructs how under Colonialism Muslims were categorized into three broad but overlapping categories - Ashraf, Ajlafs and Arzals - and that Muslims were categorized into Asiatic, Non-Asiatic, Foreign, Mixed and Hindustani –Muslim categories. It argues that few colonial theories applied to Muslims. Finally, the author explores post-colonial documentation of castes among Muslims in various Commission reports, particularly in Backward class commission reports and its interplay in the reservation politics of the contemporary period and examines the growth of various Muslim caste organizations in different parts of India and their role in identity politics. Providing a new perspective on the issue of minorities in India, this book will be of interest to scholars of religion, Islam, history, politics and sociology of India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Officially confined to red-light districts, brothels in British India were tolerated until the 1920s. Yet, by this time, prostitution reform campaigns led by Indian, imperial, and international bodies were combining the social scientific insights of sexology and hygiene with the moral condemnations of sexual slavery and human trafficking. These reformers identified the brothel as exacerbating rather than containing "corrupting prostitutes" and the threat of venereal diseases, and therefore encouraged the suppression of brothels rather than their urban segregation. In this book, Stephen Legg tracks the complex spatial politics surrounding brothels in the interwar period at multiple scales, including the local, regional, national, imperial, and global. Campaigns and state policies against brothels did not just operate at different scales but made scales themselves, forging new urban, provincial, colonial, and international formations. In so doing, they also remade the boundary between the state and the social, through which the prostitute was, Legg concludes, "civilly abandoned."

Book excerpt: Situated at the south-eastern extremity of the Indian Peninsula, Tamil Nadu is bounded on the north by the State of Karnataka and the State of Andhra Pradesh, on the south by the Indian Ocean, on the east by the Bay of Bengal and on the west by the State of Kerala. It has a coast line of 620 miles and a land boundary of 750 miles. With an area of 129, 900.6 square kilometers, it is the eleventh State in area forming 4.08 per cent of the Union areas.[1] At the beginning of the twentieth century, Madras Presidency formed one of the most extensive of British territories in India. It stretched from Cape Comorian, the southern top of the Indian Peninsula, halfway up the east coast of Bengal.[2]Tamil region, the homeland of the Tamils, occupies the southern-most region of the erstwhile Madras Presidency.[3]The Tamil districts of the Presidency were Chingleput, North Arcot, South Arcot, Salem, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Trichinoply, Tanjore, Madurai, Ramnad and Tinnevelly.[4] When reorganization of the States was made in 1956, regional adjustments were done and the State of Madras was created on November 1, 1956, as a lingual state with Tamil as its language.

Book excerpt: Social stigmatization is a virtual curse imposed on certain Indian social sections by the colonial government as part of their contextual political strategies by late nineteenth century. The so-called denotified tribes (formerly known as ex-criminal tribes) in Indian society occupy this state-made category. According to the latest survey reports, India has 198 groups belonging to nomadic and denotified tribes: unorganized, scattered and utter nobodies. Social justice is alien to them and economic disempowerment eventually resulted in slavery, bonded labour and poverty. Public welfare measures pay scant attention to the issue of reform and rehabilitation of these sections and, they are made to suffer from an identity crisis today. Most of these communities are split under reserved categories: Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Classes. The work tries to present a narrative detailing the conditions of denotified tribes during colonial and post-colonial India. And the undeclared wish in doing so is to seek the attention of those in policy-making and decision-making bodies under the Indian government. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the steady growth of interest in the history of India under the British, interpretations have emerged, and they may sharply alter much of our thinking about Indian nationalism and British Imperialism. Some of these historical revisions, and the conclusions which may flow from them, are illustrated by the essays in this book. All of them grapple with questions of Indian political organization in different parts of the British Raj. They enquire how these organizations worked at different level; in the towns and in the countryside, in the provinces and in the subcontinent itself. They examine how these kinds of politics came to be bonded together into what were called 'nationalist' movements. They suggest that the interplay between these movements and British Imperialism was very much more ambiguous than has been commonly supposed. All these essays are preliminary announcements of findings which will later appear in longer versions.
