Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Medical Equipment and Pharmaceuticals Market-Oriented, Sector-Selective (Moss) Discussions: By the U. S. And Japan Moss Negotiating Teams to the Minister for Foreign Affairs Abe Secretary of State Shultz On January 2, 1985, President Reagan and Prime Minister Nakasone met in Los Angeles to discuss, among other issues, bilateral economic issues. The moss talks resulted from that meeting. On January 28 and 29, 1985, high - level officials from Japan and the United States met in Tokyo to launch the process agreed to by the President and the Prime Minister. The United States presented an approach that was market-oriented and sector - selective, with the acronym moss. The market-oriented aspect of this approach meant focusing on removing barriers that limit market access. The sector - selective aspect meant undertaking this barrier - removal within specific industrial sectors telecommunications, medical equipment and pharmaceuticals, electronics, and forest products discussed by the President and the Prime Minister. The Japanese side indicated that it was willing to follow this moss approach. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Medical Technology in Japan by : Christa Altenstetter
Download or read book Medical Technology in Japan written by Christa Altenstetter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan is suffering from a "device gap." Compared to its American and European counterparts, Japan lags in adopting innovative medical devices and making new treatments and procedures available to its patients. Many blame its government and bureaucracy for Japan's delayed access to modern medicine and new medical devices. Christa Altenstetter examines the contextual social, historical, and political conditions of Japan's medical field to make sense of the state of the country's medical profession and its regulatory framework. She explores the development of regulatory frameworks and considers possibilities for eventual reform and modernization. More specifically, Altenstetter looks into how physicians and device companies connect to the government and bureaucracy, the relationships connecting Japanese patients to their medical system and governmental bureaucracy, and how the relationships between policymakers and the medical profession are changing. The issues addressed here are becoming increasingly relevant as numerous countries in Asia, Latin America, and Central and Eastern Europe are only now beginning to regulate medical technology, following the lead of the US and the European Union. Those interested in global medicine and Asian studies will find this book both informative and compelling.

Download or read book Japan's Unequal Trade written by Edward J. Lincoln and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2001-06-29 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With all the rapid economic success in Japan, it is easy to forget just how insular the nation has been, and how strikingly different its trading patterns remain from those of other industrialized nations. Japan is moving into an era of greater interaction with the world, but Lincoln contends that this does not mean the United States and other nations can end their pressure on Japan to continue opening its markets. "Now is the time to bring Japan into the fold," Lincoln writes in his introduction. Lincoln focuses on the question of access to Japanese markets, Japan's pattern of trade on imports, and the consequences of large trade and current-account imbalances. He argues against the United States abandoning its free-trade ideal and offers suggestions for applying pressure to encourage greater real access to Japanese markets.

Book excerpt: Controversy continues about the ability of the state to promote international competitiveness of industry in general and of specific industries in particular. This study examines how the policies of the British and Japanese governments have affected the development of the pharmaceutical industries in each country. Three areas are given close attention: policies which aim to control prices or profits; patent policy; and science and technology promotion policy, particularly policies for biotechnology. Prospects for these policies are considered in the context of moves towards harmonisation of pharmaceutical regulation.
