Download or read book Criminal Injustice written by Robynne Neugebauer and published by Canadian Scholars’ Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines racism within the process of criminal justice. In every society criminal justice plays a key role establishing social control and maintaining the hegemony of the dominant economic classes. The contributors to this anthology argue that the differential treatment of people of colour and First Nations peoples is due to systemic racism within all levels of the criminal justice system, which serves these dominant classes. Ideological and cultural changes are preconditions for the success of anti-racist policies and practices within the criminal justice system and within other state institutions. Recommendations for transformations in justice policy and practice are provided.
Book Synopsis Urban Policing in Canada by : Maurice A. Martin
Download or read book Urban Policing in Canada written by Maurice A. Martin and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1995-05-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin examines the environment of policing, a profoundly urban enterprise that has been greatly influenced by the pace and nature of urbanization. While police continue to serve the criminal justice system well, he finds that they have become less effective in carrying out the larger function of maintaining order, which must be tailored to changing urban circumstances. Policing still functions as a craft, with its hallmark in-at-the-bottom entry requirements and emphasis on skills attained through experience. In Urban Policing in Canada Martin makes a convincing case for transforming policing into a knowledge-based profession.

Book Synopsis The Canadian Criminal Justice System by : Nick Larsen
Download or read book The Canadian Criminal Justice System written by Nick Larsen and published by Canadian Scholars’ Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The administration of justice is an area of social policy that defies attempts to achieve a balance between order and the protection of the public and respect for individual rights. The media contain daily accounts of the failure of the criminal justice system to repress crime. It is within this social and legal context that this work is situated. In addition to including a range of articles in the standard areas of policing, courts, and corrections, recent articles deal with such controversial issues as aboriginal justice, the recruitment of visible minorities by Canadian police forces, and the role of women in the Canadian criminal justice system. The collection concludes with a critical assessment of the retributive model that currently serves as the philosophical underpinnings of the Canadian criminal justice system.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the issues of peacekeeping, racism, and accountability in relation to the Canadian Forces experience in Somalia. The issues are first addressed from a theoretical perspective, including peacekeeping in the historical and Canadian contexts, racial-ethnic prejudice, racism in the military, who should be accountable, and what should be accounted for. The issues are then discussed in the context of the actual mission to Somalia, divided in three phases: pre-deployment, including selection and screening, training, and hazing rituals; in-theatre operations, including racial prejudice, use of force, and rules of engagement; and post-deployment, in which accountability issues are examined in more detail. A separate chapter studies the role of the Canadian Airborne Regiment and its mission. Recommendations are made regarding training for peacekeeping, developing policies against racial discrimination, and increasing accountability.

Download or read book Interrogating Social Justice written by Marilyn Corsianos and published by Canadian Scholars Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social justice is a concept we take for granted. We assume that it means using state structures to ensure equality and fairness. But is that true? Or, do state structures of social order actually inhibit creativity, freedom, social welfare, and belonging? This collection broadens the boundaries of the ways we think about what constitutes criminality and interrogates issues of social justice and power in new, innovative and critical ways. The essays examine a wide variety of themes, including the deconstruction of concepts of freedom and equality, notions of criminality and deviance, state regulation of social order, and various aspects of feminist criminology.

Book Synopsis Conflict, Crisis, and Accountability by : Charles Smith
Download or read book Conflict, Crisis, and Accountability written by Charles Smith and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Conflict, Crisis, and Accountability focuses on racial profiling in a law enforcement context, particularly as it relates to domestic policing and anti-terrorism initiatives, and issues concerning the reality and impact on peoples of African descent and those ensnared in post 9/11 security actions. The book is divided into five chapters. The first two summarize developments contributing to the conflict between the Toronto Police and the African Canadian community as well as the history of racial profiling and domestic law enforcement in the U.S., the U.K. and Canada. The next two look at the impact of anti-terrorism legislation, its effect on particular racialized groups and how this is part of the history of Canadian immigration law and policy. The final chapter reviews current efforts to reduce and eliminate racial profiling in domestic law enforcement; several of the measures examined might be useful for all law enforcement officials, whether domestic or at the borders of the nation."--Pub. website
