Book excerpt: The current fossil fuel-based system of mobility is associated with a wide range of environmental and social problems. There is a growing body of literature on system innovations and transitions which has as a common understanding that long-term transformative change is necessary to deal with these complex problems. However, knowledge on the crucial role of citizen-consumers in sustainable mobility transitions is still underdeveloped. By incorporating the viewpoint of consumption patterns and everyday life routines, this book provides (new) knowledge on the role of citizen-consumers in sustainable mobility transitions. Theoretically, a practice based approach is developed as a novel framework to analyse, understand and influence transition processes to sustainable mobility at the level of everyday life. The focus in each of the three cases studies is on situated interactions between consumers and producers. Amongst these is an analysis of the role environmental information and subsidies in new car purchasing. Also, various examples in which an attempt was made to orchestrate a (modal) shift in commuting practices are examined. Each of the empirical case studies shows the important role of contextual factors in understanding and influencing mobility behaviour of citizen-consumers. In addition, this book helps to understand how and why innovation in mobility practices takes place or not.

Book excerpt: Salivary Endoscopy is a rapidly emerging field that has revolutionized the management of non-neoplastic diseases of the salivary gland, such as salivary stones, sialadenitis, and salivary duct stenosis. With the emergence of endoscopic access to the salivary ductal system, several procedural and technical innovations have emerged that have now permitted gland preservation surgery for these pathologies. As more centers and physicians are adopting this rapidly emerging and evolving procedure, there is a need for source of literature that provides current concepts and detailed technical descriptions of the procedures that involve gland preservation surgery. This text intends to capture the current concepts among experts and in literature regarding the management of non-neoplastic salivary gland diseases. The book also focuses on steps of surgical management and technical pearls while providing detailed information on the decision-making process when emcompassing the diversity of clinical presentation, intra-operative decision-making and post op care. Gland Preservation Surgery provides high quality illustrations, clinical and operative images, and videos that serve as an online resource to salivary gland surgeons and endoscopists with varying experience and expertise.

Book excerpt: "The Habitant and Other French-Canadian Poems" is a collection of poetry written by William Henry Drummond, a Canadian poet born in Ireland. Published in 1897, this collection is notable for its exploration of French-Canadian culture and dialect. Drummond's poems in this collection often portray the life, language, and traditions of the habitants, the French-Canadian rural inhabitants. He captures the essence of their daily lives, struggles, and joys in a distinctive blend of English and French dialects, showcasing his efforts to preserve the cultural and linguistic heritage of the French-Canadian community. One of Drummond's well-known poems from this collection is "The Wreck of the 'Julie Plante'," which humorously narrates the misadventures of a French-Canadian man during a steamboat journey. "The Habitant and Other French-Canadian Poems" is considered a pioneering work in Canadian literature, as it brings attention to the multicultural and multilingual aspects of Canadian identity. Drummond's ability to capture the unique character of French-Canadian life contributed to the broader recognition and appreciation of Canadian literature during the late 19th century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of us will know physical pain in our lives, but none of us knows when it will come or how long it will stay. Today as much as 10 percent of the population of the United States suffers from chronic pain. It is more widespread, misdiagnosed, and undertreated than any major disease. While recent research has shown that pain produces pathological changes to the brain and spinal cord, many doctors and patients still labor under misguided cultural notions and outdated scientific dogmas that prevent proper treatment, to devastating effect. In The Pain Chronicles, a singular and deeply humane work, Melanie Thernstrom traces conceptions of pain throughout the ages—from ancient Babylonian pain-banishing spells to modern brain imaging—to reveal the elusive, mysterious nature of pain itself. Interweaving first-person reflections on her own battle with chronic pain, incisive reportage from leading-edge pain clinics and medical research, and insights from a wide range of disciplines—science, history, religion, philosophy, anthropology, literature, and art—Thernstrom shows that when dealing with pain we are neither as advanced as we imagine nor as helpless as we may fear. Both a personal meditation and an intellectual exploration, The Pain Chronicles illuminates and makes sense of the all-too-human experience of pain—and confronts with extraordinary grace and empathy its peculiar traits, its harrowing effects, and its various antidotes.
