Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This Sourcebook aims to support efforts by countries to strengthen the role of the education sector in the prevention of HIV/AIDS. It was developed in response to numerous requests for a simple forum to help countries share their practical experiences of designing and implementing programs that are targeted at school-age children. The Sourcebook seeks to fulfill this role by providing concise summaries of programs, using a standard format that highlights the main elements of the programs and makes it easier to compare the programs with each other. A Sourcebook of HIV/AIDS Prevention Programs, 2nd Edition documents 13 education based HIV/AIDS prevention programs targeting children and youth from 7 sub-Saharan African countries. It is sponsored by UNAIDS, UNICEF, UNESCO, UNFPA, DFID, USAID, Ireland Aid and the World Bank. The Sourcebook represents the work of many contributors, and was developed by the Partnership for Child Development with the World Bank.

Book Synopsis Unfinished Business: Democracy in Namibia by : Bryan M. Sims
Download or read book Unfinished Business: Democracy in Namibia written by Bryan M. Sims and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2012 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Idasa's Democracy Index - initially developed for South Africa - is being expanded into Southern Africa in an effort to broaden the capacity of individuals and organisations monitoring and supporting democratic governance efforts in the region. This inaugural Democracy Index for Namibia is intended to set a benchmark for democracy to be measured against. The tool assesses the country's depth of democracy through five focus areas: participation, elections, accountability, political rights, and human dignity. The research relies on expert analysis to answer a set of questions that interrogate how closely, in practice, democracy meets the broad ideal of self-representative government. More specifically, to what extent can citizens control elected officials and government appointees who make decisions about public affairs? And how equal are citizens to one another in this accountability process? The purpose of the scores is to assist citizens in making their own judgements, based on the information made available, to stimulate national debate and to provide democracy promoters with a tool for identifying issues and needs that can be addressed by education, advocacy, training, institution building and policy revision.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protected areas are at the base of the most national and international conservation strategies. Due to the many unpredictable elements in ecology matters, each protected area requires a case-specific set of guidelines but a common issue is how to cope with human interaction. The management of protected areas is replete with challenges and the only way to gain understanding and achieve greater management possibilities is to exchange experiences and knowledge. Environmental managers are aware of that and together with scientists are looking for more modern and better solutions, both with respect to natural resources and human interactions in many issues regarding nature protection. This publication presents reviews and research results on protected areas management, as well as 12 case studies derived from around the world with the aim of improving management effectiveness of the protected areas.
Book Synopsis Innovations in Land Rights Recognition, Administration, and Governance by : Klaus Deininger
Download or read book Innovations in Land Rights Recognition, Administration, and Governance written by Klaus Deininger and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-10-22 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of good land governance to strengthen women s land rights, facilitate land-related investment, transfer land to better uses, use it as collateral, and allow effective decentralization through collection of property taxes has long been recognized. The challenges posed by recent global developments, especially urbanization, increased and more volatile food prices, and climate change have raised the profile of land and the need for countries to have appropriate land policies. However, efforts to improve country-level land governance are often frustrated by technical complexities, institutional fragmentation, vested interests, and lack of a shared vision on how to move towards good land governance and measure progress in concrete settings. Recent initiatives have recognized the important challenges this raises and the need for partners to act in a collaborative and coordinated fashion to address them. The breadth and depth of the papers included in this volume, all of which were presented at the World Bank s Annual Conference on Land Policy and Administration, illustrate the benefits from such collaboration. They are indicative not only of the diversity of issues related to land governance but, more importantly, highlight that, even though the topic is complex and politically challenging, there is a wealth of promising new approaches to improving land governance through innovative technologies, country-wide policy dialogue, and legal and administrative reforms. The publication is based on an on-going partnership between the World Bank, the International Federation of Surveyors, the Global Land Tool Network and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization provide tools that can help to address land governance in practice and at scale. It is our hope that this volume will be of use to increase awareness of and support to the successful implementation of innovative approaches that can help to not only improve land governance, but also thereby contribute to the well-being of the poorest and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

Book Synopsis Women in Transition by : Suzanne LaFont
Download or read book Women in Transition written by Suzanne LaFont and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1998-07-10 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in Transition addresses the historical, social, economic and political dynamics affecting the lives of women during Lithuania's transition from communism to democracy. This book demonstrates that democracy has not diminished gender discrimination. In fact, the recent political and economic changes threaten to widen the gender gap through a decline in political representation, an increase in women's unemployment and underemployment, and the threat of restrictive reproductive policies. Furthermore, low birth rates coupled with a sharp rise in nationalism has led to propaganda encouraging women to return to home and family. Women in Transition details how women are responding to these changes. The first and only book published about Lithuanian women by Lithuanian women, this unique volume fills a gap in knowledge of the country's society and the role of its women. An important contribution to the growing body of literature on post-communism, the book is written by many of the leading women scholars in Lithuania including the head of the Women's Studies program and the Chair of the Sociology Department at Vilnius University; the Counsellor to the Parliament on Women's Issues; the Dean of Kaunas University; and the Chairperson of the Women's Party of Lithuania. Suzanne LaFont, former Visiting Professor at Kaunas University, has edited the book and provided an introduction.
